hello everyone!  i'm new to the forum... but have been lurking for, oh, about a year now :)
 
i'm currently wearing braid extensions in my type 4a, thick hair (it's thick because i only touch it once a day; constant combing and brushing is a no-no for me), and haven't had a relaxer since May of 2006.  i plan on taking the braids out in a couple of weeks, and have no desire to cut off my relaxed hair (which isn't TOO damaged, i never keep in relaxers very long), and go completely natural...  at least not yet; i'm scared! :)
 
i've never flat-ironed my hair in my life, but i want a straight style, and am scared to put another no-lye relaxer in my hair, because i've heard how they can strip the hair of its elasticity.
 
is it safe to flat-iron previously relaxed hair?
is it possible to get a lye-relaxer on my new growth, and still have the rest of my hair be okay?

You can use lye relaxer on your new growth.  Make sure that after you remove your braids, do a deep conditioning treatment.  If I were you, I would wait for no less than a week, before relaxing.  Once your hair is in good condition, and you condition your hair well, and use a good heat protectant, you should be okay to use a flatiron.

Hello there if you put relaxer on the ng that is a touch up and it sounds like you want to got natural so I would not recomend doing that if that is the case. Yes it is safe to flat iron relaxed hair and I co-sign with Claudie you should do a deep conditioning & protein treatment first. Flat iron in small sections to get roots straight or go to the salon and have them do it..just make sure to moisturize daily afterward HTH
