Hi,
I have been indirectly involved in Jessica Simpson hair for about 4 1/2 years.
When I first met Ken Paves in Dallas 4 1/2 years ago....he was doing a photo shoot with Jess for 17 Magazine. I spent 2 1/2 days with him and Jess and OMG, he had to change her hair so many times. I was exhausted watching him.
He had a ton of wigs and hair extensions prepared in advance to speed up the process but it took him a really long time even with advanced cutting, curling, styling.
Ken is from a small town outside of Detroit and he has a very special bond with his mom and his family. He is definitely a big name in the hair world but he is a very kind and loving person who gives so much to charity to help people and he adores women.
Especially everyday peope that struggle to look nice.
About 2 1/2 years ago he asked me to help him find a wig manufacturer that would take his invention which is patented for making clip on hair that he developed. What he discovered was that if he attached the hair extensions to a half lace style cap, he could easily snap them into the hair so that it would be very quick.
He fine tuned the process over the years and took the design to HairUWear. They were thrilled because it was a brand new "easy to install in a snap" technology built on a very lightweight "cap" type of system that has a lot of great advantages.
One of the other reasons he wanted to invent the cap system was because he found that a lot of women who bought the 10 piece POP systems would still go to the hairdresser to have them installed.
The majority of women are NOT like you guys here and they either don't have time to really understand their options or they are just not into it. So they would buy the POP human hair extensions in the 10 piece kits and they would take them to their hairdressers and pay to have them put in.
Ken felt that was crazy because he wanted consumers to have the freedom to easily and quickly put these pieces in at home.
So he took the soft half cap concept one step further and looked at making it into a system. I know the HairUWear "hair designer" that worked with Ken and Jessica. They wanted to offer both synth and human hair and they wanted to be the highest possible quality for the price. They worked with the HUW designer very very closely to design the pieces from scratch. They spent so many days and weeks on this project you can't believe.
They literally looked at hundreds and hundreds of hair examples, colors, styles until they agreed on the initial 5 offerings and the initial colors.
In April they did a behind the scenes photo shoot with Ken and Jessica and Jessica's great dog Daisy (I want to steal her) and HairUWear was there with all the executives and the hair designer and they brought bags and bags and bags of hair.
Ken was partial to HairUWear because as a celebrity stylist he had worked with many many different companies and always went back to Great Lengths. He liked the quality of their hair, their customer service and they would work with him on new ideas.
Consequently he and Jessica (and yes, she was involved every step of the way) signed for the new line with HairUWear (they also own Great Lengths).
The HairDo line is just the first phase. There is a second line coming out.
The human hair is the absolutely highest quality they could find to offer at the best possible price considering all the factors involving the designs and other issues. The synth is also the highest quality that they could offer for the price and what it is.
Trust me...Ken is very very very picky. I mean he is a perfectionist and he and Jessica had 100% say over what went to market. This took over 1 1/2 years to come to pass.
At the photo shoot in April in Hollywood I was allowed on set as the only media person. I watched the models use the pieces and they all loved it.
So for Ken's goals to offer the average woman the opportunity to have a foolproof system (and it literally snaps on in 5 minutes or less) that looks good, it meets what he was trying to do.
And yes, the price may be high compared to what you guys could do for yourself but considering that women used to buy POP human hair and then still have to pay a hairdresser, they can bypass that whole step.
The human hair pieces are gorgeous. Very nice hair and I tried the synth and it is very nice compared to other synth that I have had.
But yes...bottom line...it is not for DIYers of the expertise you guys have. It is for the girl next store that wants to wear these type of hair systems but doesn't want to spend time researching.
Since Ken and Jessica have their name on this product, they are very very concerned about how the product is sold and the customer care behind it.
The main reason that HB.com is carrying the product is very specifically because Ken asked me to. Originally I was not going to take the product since I have never had an interest in selling hair of any kind through HB.com.
We are known for our hair accessories and that is my passion. But he asked me personally as a favor to him and Jessica (who is also my friend) and I could not say no to him.
Ken and I have been through a lot of things together and like with any close friend, I would try to honor their requests.
I also carry Robert Hallowell's hair care line in my store because he is a dear friend as well. The line is small and it has a very niche market but I keep it for him to help promote him.
So that is the whole story about HairDo and the whys and wherefores.
Hope that gives you all interesting "behind the scenes" insights.
By the way...I have a few photos that have never been released from that "private Jessica/Ken" shoot and once I get Ken's permission, I will be sharing them.
Tina Simpson was there at the private shoot and she is the nicest woman on the planet. And yes, Jessica is really a doll. She has done some very kind things for me and is a very sweet person.
