yes so i'm very new to hair styling, mainly because i basically just wear my hair down, and i have been for a long time. i mainly just straighten it most days, but i really want to learn to put it up in a messy bun and curl it. i'm having a VERY hard time putting it in a bun (i've seriously cried after about and hour at the attempt), so if anybody has any tips or steps on how to do it, i would really appreciate it.

How long is it?  The length will play a big role in the methods you may need to use to do it.

I believe it's about 6 inches below my shoulder.

Okay, so unless your hair is pretty thin, its not quite long enough yet for the traditional twisted around bun, this was probably why it wasn't working.  I'd suggest using a claw clip and twisting it from the nape of the neck upward and clamp it on the fold part so the ends stick out of the top, then you can arrange them to stick up messily or curl down over the clip.

Another thing that might be closer and more bunlike, is if you put it in a ponytail in the back of your head, wrap it around once, so you've got some ends sticking out to make it look messy, put another band around the bun part, then use a hairstick to spread the bun out so it hides the two bands (sticking it into one side of the bun, under the bands near the scalp, then upwards into the other edge of the bun to come out the opposite side).  The stick will not only help it hold, but it will help the bun lay flat so it doesn't look like a loop of hair just hanging there.  Then you can arrange your ends.  Hope this helps. Smile
