I am naturally medium brown.  I bleached to light blonde...then decided to go back natural after a couple years.  I went to the salon and had lowlights and highlights done which looked great, but not as dark as I wanted.  Now it is lightening up again because my hair is porous from the bleacing and it's too blonde for me again.  I want to go darker, but don't want to spend another $150 in the salon.  Any suggestions?  I'm trying to get to a nice medium brown, borderline dark brown with a few reddish lighlights.

Awesome,it will be pretty easy to do. I just did it myself,so I have a few tips for ya.
First, pick a red hair dye that you like. Not anything too intense~get  a light auburn or reddish blonde color. You will dye your hair red First.
Also have already picked out a medium brown to reddish brown color of your choice. I would opt for a reddish brown,as the hair might seem shockingly dark to you at first if you go too dark.
After you color red, simply go over it with the brown, and there you have it! I know it sounds crazy and complicated, but this is what the people at Clairol consulted me to do.You can ask them yourself at http://www.clairol.com - www.clairol.com if you have any questions. You can even have a live chat with a color specialist for free. They will guide you step by step.
Good luck!Wink
Oh,you could also check at a Beauty supply store for some protein filler. You could get colored or clear, and add about 1-2 ounces in with dye and it should keep damage to a minium. (although going darker in itself is much less damaging then going lighter)

Thanks for the tips!

I couldn't wait though so I ended up getting a box of Garnier 100% in Medium Golden Brown and it turned out BEAUTIFUL.  It is shockingly dark, but everyone loves it so far....especially my toughest critic....my husband.  haha    There is a little bit of a red tone to it too that is just gorgeous!
I'll post some before and after pics shortly!  I LOVE the new color....and I did it a week ago and so far NO fading has occurred!  Garnier 100% is awesome....NO noticable damage either!  I'm going to post another message about the product out there as well as here!

Thank you for the advice! I appreciate your help!

Well,if you do find fading occurs in a week or so,you could always go over it with a semi like natural instincts. There are also some pretty good color depositing shampoos to color boost in between colorings. I got one called ARTEC which I bought online in cherry bark (a reddish brown) and when my color needs a little pick me up I use it. It is way better then the kind they sell at places like walmart or cvs cuz it actually has color in it unlike some shampoos that claim to (the John Frieda and Pantene ones dont really do anything)

Sounds GREAT!  Where do you get ARTEC?  At the salon?

I haven't been shampooing every single day like I used to.  I use a very minimal amount when I do use shampoo....just enough to get rid of any product build up.  And I have been using color locking conditioner by the handful as well as color locking spray on my damp hair.  Seems to be working!!   I am just ecstatic about my new (natural) color!!

I ordered mine online...someone in this forum gave me a link to the website where I could order it. But I'm assuming you could find it easily just hitting the search engine and typing it in.
You may be able to find the link she gave me if you check in some of the older posts.I think the post was titled "Red Colored shampoos.

Oh good! I did find the post and you can order it at http://www.beautydeals.net - www.beautydeals.net   too.
It is a great shampoo...but you cant use it like regular shampoo. You have to use a real one first, then the colored shampoo.Cuz it only deposits color, doesnt really clean hair.
