I want to color with Clairol Natural Instincts and it says not to shampoo 24 hours before and 24 hours after, I don't think I can go that long!

The purpose of not shampoo'ing 24 hours before is so your natural sebum is present to protect your hair a bit.And to wait 24 hours after is so the dye can completely settle. To be honest though I have neither waited before or after at times and havent seen any difference than when I did wait. But letting your hair get a little oily isnt a bad idea.

I totally agree, I don't think it is awful for your hair to not have a lot of natural oils on it before you color, but it's just to have more of a buffer for your hair (and scalp) from color. Sometimes, if my hair is freshly washed, and kinda dry, I will spray a little leave-in-conditioner on before I color, and maybe a little conditioner on the ends before I color...and let it sit for 30 min or so, then color. I've noticed a better result when I do this.
