Cry (add numerous expletives here - especially those beginning with F)
Okay, so just the other day I posted something saying how I LOVED Protac because it didn't ruin your own hair.  Blah blah blah...

Some of my tapes started to slip so tonight I took them down using the Neutrogena, like I have once before and so much of my own hair came out I want to cry. The worst thing was when I combed if after I had showered I saw those tell-tale little white ends on my hair....meaning that its being pulled out at the root. I don't have bald spots or anything that hideous, but my own hair had really started to become thick and longer and now I feel like I've completely ruined it!!! Angry

I'm terrified to put the extensions back in. Has this happened to anyone esle? Am I not being patient enough when I take them out (a strong possibility seeing as I am a little impatient by nature!) and I'm wondering if by not using the C-22 or something like that, that I'm not letting the tape just slide out naturally.

I'm so so sad right now and would love some advice/feedback.

I think you will naturally have lots of hair fall out with any extensions. Keep in mind that it's trapping the hair that normally sheds, which is actually a lot more than you would think.

Also, my doc told me the amount you shed can depend on a variety of things, and can change (there was a point where I had many various dysfunctions and I was losing TONS of hair a day, and this was before extensions) so if it seems like more hair than before, it doesn't nessicarily mean it's bad.

If it had the white bulbs, it might just mean when you were taking it down you were pulling too much. Or if you said they were starting to slip, I know in my cases, it put a lot of weight on my hair when they slip.

Really, when I take down now, I try not to do any of the cringing and deep breathing. I leave them in and keep applying more and more, oil or conditioner until I can lightly tug on the ends and they all just slip down.

Just don't get too upset, it may be something that has nothing to do with you or the extensions.

i noticed the first time i took down my extensions that i had glued in i lost a lot of hair which im also trying to avoid. for now im using the ultrtatress seamless extensions with the tapes. i tape them in only with the tape and they last 1 week and then i peel them right off with no hair loss just a little liquid bond remover . tjhen i put the blowdryer on 1 second and they come right out. i shampoo and put them back in. takes very little effort of time. but i dont have many in. i just have like 6 wefts. im using for volume only i have the length. anyway this is working out great so far. i cant worry about hair loss with every take down so this is less like cement . comes out quick but i defininitely have to do more often. anyway so far its working for me. im trying to damage my hair less witht he extensions so itll get back some thickness. i lost a lot from bleaching it blonde. now im brown hair and trying to regain whats been broken off by repeated bleaching. anyway hope i helped.

I tried the Protac method 3 times, and each time I lost of hair, way more than I should have.  I also have a few clients who I have seen lose way more hair than they should with these things.   I don't use them anymore on myself or my clients.

I think part of the problem when you double up (or even triple up) hair on the rows, it's just too much weight on the hair and hence you get root pull.  I suppose if you didn't double the rows it may be better, but then to get the thickness that I want, I'd have to do 15 single rows, and my head is not that big!

By the way, I didn't pull too hard on removal, they all came out just fine, so the pulling can't attribute for my hair loss.

After doing hundreds of hair extensions over the years, I have found that some people just have fragile hair that is not firmly planted in their scalps, therefore ANY extension method will cause hair loss with them.

Hi!
I am SO glad that you mention that problem Cat Goddess, because I have been in this exact same situation myself.
I don't have any bald spots or any thining areas though, and I haven't pulled a single hair of mine when I took out the tapes so I just couldn't understand what was going on.
I am a little confused about this issue, it happent to me twice or so, since I am wearing Protac, and I am still currently wearing it, because I love this method and it "feels" so gentle on my hair, no pulling at all.
With fusion I felt that my own hair was pulled (both when wearing it and when removing it), with Protac I don't feel any pulling at all.
I hope this is a natural shedding of my own hair, a girl from the board told me that one loses about 100 hairs everyday, so I'm thinking that with the tapes in, you just don't lose all this hair, it stays stuck in, and maybe when I remove the tapes, I feel like I am actually losing about a month of natural shedding at once.
I have to agree that it is quite terrifying. But maybe it's just a natural process?..
I have a question for you girls: has anyone witnessed the same phenomenon with Liquid Gold? (I haven't tried LG yet)

Thanks Ladies! Well, I'm glad I'm not the only one. I let my hair dry naturally last night and it doesn't seem as bad as I thought, but it is definitely thinner. I'm going to give it one more try and next time I remove them, I'm going to use the citrus remover, leave it in and let them slide out naturallly. My scalp is a little sore this morning, so I do think I was pulling too hard last night.  If it does this again I'm ditching the extensions.
Thanks again for all your feedback!

I had the same experience when I got a little too excited about taking out my extensions. I think I definitely pulled out hair in a couple spots, but I also didn't let the stuff sit on for long enough, and another thing is that you get so used to having your hair look thick with extensions, taking them out leaves your hair as it is....which is usually thinner without the extensions it. So, that was a let down. but I realized I had just overpulled in a couple spots. I could locate those spots for a couple days, but now, a month later, I couldn't tell you where they are. Last time I did a partial takedown to replace a couple wefts, I used olive oil and let it sit on the wefts for a half hour. Then, i slowly wriggled the wefts out while I watched something on TV, and they came out perfectly, no pulling, no loss. Actually, it was a nice moisturizing treatment (As long as you wash off the oil relaly well before your next install!

Good luck, don't let it get you down. Everything takes practice, and just like putting them in, protacs take practice to take out! I've definitely been there.

Hi Andreau and Cat Goddess,
For me, I have to precise that the removal process was extremely easy without any pulling at all, but I still did experience a loss of my own hair that was very important.
It has nothing to do with the remover I think, I use both the Cirtrus oil stuff and pure acetone. It comes out very very easily.
The hair loss, at least in my case, has nothing to do with the removel process.

I still "freak" everytime I do a removal, it just seems like so much hair sometimes.

Ok, this is a weird question, but does anybody have picture of how much hair they comb out after a removal?  This would give me and others an idea of how much you are losing compared to how much I am losing at each take down.  There are sometimes that I feel I HAVE to wear extensions now because my hair is too thin to go without, but then I do remember that my hair has always been sucky and this is why I wear extensions.  Pictures would be helpful, it may put my mind to rest about how much hair I lose.  I almost started counting the hair strands because I was so freaked one time, but luckily never did.Shocked

I think we ALL freak out when we take out our hair.  We have gotten soooo used to having the extra hair that it makes our real hair feel even thinner, which is usually why we have the extension in the first place... well that and lenght...     But  what I do to help my freak outs is take pictures after every take down..... yup kinda silly but it really has helped me!!!  plus I can see for sure if it's getting thinner or just my imagination and I can also monitor the growth!!!Smile

Cat Goddess, don't worry the hair will grow back. Wink You are putting weight on your hair.

I am using a double sided tape called Pro-Flex II but is not the blue one everyone is using, I have not experience slippage probably because I reinforeced it with Liquid Gold. The removal is easy because I use Acetone and the wefts are out with no pain. I use mostly the tape to create double wefts and works great. Even after removal the wefts are still together attached by the tape and in the backing I am left with a transparent film, after the adhesive is gone in that side, where I reapply the LG to reinstall.

About the hair falling, is when I am at the last 3 rows I start getting desperate to finish that I start pulling the hair LOL. And trying to remove the LG residue. I just removed mine to relax my edges. MY hair is growing so fast since I've been back to the hair extensions. I will reinstall Tuesday again.
BTW the hair is still holding great!!! What about yours?

g-smile - next time I do a removal I'll take a picture of the hair shed that's come out.  I always comb it out and keep it together in a big ball so I can monitor that there's not way more than there should be.  But there is quite a lot with everyone I do x

Frenchie, I had more with LG, but I also had to be more agressive to get it out of my hair in some areas, I also think I went a little crazy with applying too much glue!

I really think it's just a lot of shedding, and like other people said, you get used to the feel with the extensions in.

Also, what metalgirl said, some types of hair may be thinner, and not able to bear as much weight, and sometimes the doubling and tripling up we do can really pull too much.

But it's really never frightened me. I always think the same thing, but I've always liked extensions so much, I didn't want to sacrafice, but now whenever I go to get my hair trimmed, they always comment on how it's so thick and healthy, which they would always say the opposite before. So something must be going right!

So don't freak, extensions may not be for you, or there may be other methods for you to see how you like.

My two cents worth: If I had really thick, good hair I wouldn't use extensions. I'd be patient and let mine grow if I wanted it longer. I do think extensions damage the hair to some extent and I'd want my final result to be as perfect with my own wonderful hair as it could be.

Now with my stupid hair, I have a lot of it, albeit very fine, growing from my crown. I don't have a problem at all gluing wefts into the sides and back of my hair where my own growth is naturally very thin. I've always had thin hair in these areas. When I was wearing it super-short, my scalp showed through right behind my ears and around the back.

I did totally panic the first few times I removed my extensions and ended up with a big ball of hair in the shower. But I've learned to take them out more carefully and now end up with a small hair ball. I check that ball of hair each time and have noticed I don't have a lot of root bulbs in it. What happens more with me is some breakage while I'm wearing the wefts. I always get a few hairs glued in a loop out of the bond that catch one way or another and break. Also, I know I break some more when I'm removing them. But, I figure, my hair is already thin in the areas where I put the extensions. That's why I need them, for volume.

I rationalize that little hair ball by telling myself I would never have thick hair regardless of how well-treated my hair was. I sure wouldn't want bald spots from extensions (although I practically have them naturally in a few spots) but I'm pretty sure my hair roots are hardy. I figure that those broken-off hairs are continuing to grow. As long as I have some hair to attach those wefts to, I know I'll be wearing extensions. If my hair ever gets too stupid for extensions, I'll be wearing a lace-front wig. Now that I've had good hair I don't think I could ever go back to my old stupid hair again.

Thank you Ladies for all the feedback! You are all right of course, if we had the beautiful long thick locks we wouldn't be wearing them in the first place. My hair has always been fine and a little thin. All you comments really helped. Thank you Aphrodiva and Andreau for your comments especially. I DO tug on the last few rows at the end and get very impatient and I'm glad to hear the the hair will grow back. I am still freaking out a bit, because I did my reinstall on Saturday and I definitely have a little bald spot at the back low left of my head. I cried a little and then I said "hey, It'll grow back". It will grow back, won't it?
