I have hair which is just slightly above my waist. I was just wondering how do you keep your long hair healthy?

Hi. My hair is a few inches above my waist.
There are many ways in which you need to properly care for your long hair.
1. Proper diet- Vitamins, protein
2. Trims/dustings
3. No heat styling
4. treat your hair gently
5. Don't submit your hair to harsh winds
6. Use a silk/satin pillowcase
7. No chemical treatments(I'm trying not to)
8. No frequent washings, condition after every wash.
I'm sure there are more....
Those are just *my* opinions on how *I* need to care for my hair, and my advise to others. Other people might have different priorities. Some people don't think trimming/dusting is needed.

I try to remember that the ends of my hair are probably 15 years old.
I use a widetooth comb to detangle, and never ever brush my hair when it's wet. I never blowdry.
I use jojoba on the ends of my hair every day, and on the weekends, do a through oiling, and usually leave it in overnight. The longer the better

I always put my hair inside my coat to go outside, especially in the weather we've had lately!

I visit tlhs.org and LHC as well as this board for inspiration and support.

Good luck HTH

Your ends are 15 years old?!?!?!? That's amazing! Good for you...if only I had your kind of patience :-)

hehe - thanks Lyris.

I started with a buzz cut in 1984- spikey top, and basically shaved sides - I was so sick of short hair - I decided to go 180 degrees the other way.
Now I've got tailbone length, and I figure given all the trims and occasional split - my ends are as old as some people's kids. I'm planning to grow it as long as it will go - I figure I'll reach classic this year, and maybe mid-thigh by 2005.

And you said it - patience is the key!
See you on the boards

I'm planning to grow my hair really long as well, I dye my hair because I'm 22 years old and I am going grey my hair naturally black so the contrast is too much for me. How can I have shiny and healthy long hair while still covering the grey

What type of weather is bad for hair? And what products help protect against "bad hair weather"

I think extreme hot and cold weather is bad for hair, especially the cold(winter). In winter, consider wearing buns or braids most of the season. Don't go out with wet hair worn down. Consider usinf a humidifier too.
Windy weather is bad also....dries hair out, and makes small knots. Again, wear hair up/back...or tuck it into your coat.
I think deep-conditioning and leave-in conditioners products help protect hair during "bad hair weather."

Thank you for the replies!
I personally think that getting
ends trimmed regularly is a good
idea for long hair because
you lessen the possibility
of split ends although long hair
will have some split ends.

My hair reaches the middle of my back and is in fairly good shape. My "secrets":

no heat styling, except cool blow dryer on very wet hair just to get some of the water out;

no sun or wind;

wash every other day;

use semi permanent haircolor for grey, and only use permanent once in a blue moon (a couple of times a year, only on roots);
