Darn, I posted before about how my hair seemed damaged, well it gets worse.  I started shedding handfuls of hair (keep in mind my shampoo, color, etc has been the same for 3 years) and I was blaming the serious hair abuse I had in the salon, well nope, not that.

I went to a dermatologist and apparently the malaria and dengue fever I had in september (I'm working in Haiti for the UN) has resulted in shedding similar to what some women get postpartum.  So my fine hair is now pathetic.

I had just ordered (still waiting) for some elite thermofiber to check colors and was thinking of using protac...

Is this smart for me to do now?  The doc said it would be a slow process of getting my hair regrowth (apparently a huge amount of my hair was sent into telogenic mode (hope I spelled that right) so I have to get new hairs...I'm taking vitamin C and hair vitamins (biotin and Bs) now to try to build my system back up.

The other thing is I'm a bit afraid to color, was thinking of using a deposit only, does that affect whether protac will stay?

Should I just do one or the other but not both?

So many questions...any thoughts on this?

Thanks!

Sorry to hear that this has happened to you.
If you post pics of what your hair looked like before the loss, ,maybe someone can lead you down the correct color and texture path.
Seems to me that protac would be your best bet at this point....atleast it wouldn't put a strain on your new growth...it will just grow under the protac...and the protac will continue to move away from your scalp as your hair grows.
Seems to me this is a super method for you...IMO!
I color my hair every month and don't have a problem with the tape holding...just use a clarifying shampoo and no conditioner before intalling.

Good Luck....and Welcome!!

Current install-Bohyme Bodywave #30 and #14 in the straight hair/ they didn't have the #14 in bodywave, so I mixed them...works great!

ooh, my boss went on a cruise in january of this year and a month after she returned she became VERY ill, and after numerous tests she was determined to have dengue fever...she too experienced hair loss, and it continued over the summer....

protac/wefts, in my opinion are LESS stressfull on your real hair than other install methods....but they still ARE stressfull to a degree on your natural hair....i would really be hesitant to put any more weight on hair that is already fragile

hmmm, that said, knowing me...and when i am determined to do something i usually do it anyway....a comprimise would be to sew on some clips and maybe just wear the hair part of the day/special occasions until you are sure the shedding phase is completely through (but even the clips will make a fair amount of stress on your hair, but at least you could limit the time they are on your head), and continue on all the vitamins until your hair is stronger

color,i'd definately recommend deposit only at this point as its less damaging than lifting color...(i've used deposit only and installed protac the same day and it stayed well)

best wishes for you hair recovery!

Thanks girls.  I just emailed a salon that uses the Elumen goldwell product that I've heard really good things about and hopefully they will tell me whether they can get me in and whether they feel comfortable putting that on my hair right now.

Its still definately shedding at this point ::sigh::  so you are probably right, the extra weight would not really help.  Maybe I can just use some in hair clips, like when I do a sprouty french twist, if I clipped a hunk of hair into the middle, it would give me more volume and at least for casual days that would be ok and not be clipped or pulling on anything...

Nursie, how many months did your boss shed?  The doc didn't want to be specific about how long it would go on though some internet research says it usually is much better within like 4 months.

I'm so frustrated.  I HATE my natural color :(

As for the color it is NOW, its almost exactly like Nicole Kidman in the Chanel ads a few years ago (not the washed out it is now).  Its fine and straight though.  I'm thinking of getting elite thermofiber but I'm waiting on my sample from Shrinkies, I tried two of the blondish/gold blends as well as the strawberry blond.

I'm thinking of doing something darker and dramatic, like if you look at the elumen-haircolor site I like the image that flashes in the top with a very dark lowlight (almost milk chocolate reddish) with dark gold-copper and a lighter underlayer, very interesting.  Not sure I want something that "out there" but I like it.

Anyway, I hope my samples get here soon.  It has to come via the diplomatic pouch and it takes forever LOL  I just hope they dont open my package, can you imagine!  My official mail is a bunch of loose hair YIKES LOL

I'm sorry to hear about what you're going through. IMO I would get a long top peice aka closure piece with clips.

I can feel your pain, with both of my kids my hair shed postpartum.  It was really bad, almost frightening amounts of my hair came out everyday.

Did the doctor specify what is causing the shedding?  Is it due to folical stress?  Is the hair falling out from the root, or braking off close to the scalp?  I would agree about the clips in, because you cantake them off at night, or if you notice scalp stress.

I think you would be safe for deposit only color.  The chemicals don't really stay on your skin long enough to penetrate into the scalp.

She said that most of it was telogen loss because for most hairs I see white bulbs at the root end, but there could be some of both.  Its from malaria and dengue fever that I had in september having really brought down my system and possibly sent a lot of hair into resting/shedding stage all at the same time

I'm hoping that I can really like shiny but darker hair for a while, possibly with some elite thermo before toooooo long all over, but clip in or ponytail add-ons for now.

Thanks for the thoughts.  It is very frightening the amount that comes out, and for me that is saying something as I had cancer when I was young and lost everything below mid ear line with radiation...its not quite that bad, but bad enough.

stacey, my boss was diagnosed and treated in february, she experienced the most of the hair shedding in march, but some degree of shedding continued through the end of june...she does have short baby hairs filling back in now...i imagine you got treatment quicker than her...we're just lil ole country folks and her small town doctor had to send her to an infection control specialist before she got a diagnosis
your hair color choices sound beautiful!

Thanks Nursie.  Sounds like this might be a long haul.  I had the infection at the beginning of September and didn't notice any loss at all till beginning of November but its ongoing now since then.  I guess I will have to be patient for at least another month or two.  I can see some baby hairs at the nape of my neck and a few near my face though I didn't "count" on that too much as I pull my hair back and in pony's a lot so there is always a little breakage there from hairspray.

We'll see.  I don't have a single photo to share (I actually tried so I could get honest opinions on color choices) but nothing here.  Looks like I may move back to states over Christmas due to some security problem going on here and the stress isn't helping me regrow hair LOL not sure yet.

Thanks for the help and support.
