I am currently growing my hair. Although I have tried to get the moisture back in that seems fine I have a habit of combing my hair more than once a day even though I dont show it coz I wear a scarf.

Im just wondering whether Im causing breakage by combing it all the time after a few hours? I know I dont need to but Its a bit of a habit. Will it make a difference if I only run it through once a day?

if you are combing your hair constantly out of habit instead of necessity and you think that it may be breaking your hair then you should stop it.

i don't know what type of hair you have but african american hair is fragile and needs to be handled very gently and with care.

if your hair looks good from morning until night you really don't need to comb it again. just my opinion. I don't comb my hair everyday. i only comb it when i am getting ready to wash it. And i don't brush it either except for when i take it out of braids.  one of the sisters on this site tuned me into the no brushing rule. makes sense my hair no longer on the floor. hee hee

Whenever I comb my hair I notice some breakage. I comb my hair about twice per day. So I can imagine if I combed all the time how much breakage I would see. From the forums alot the the girls advise against combing the hair too often, especially when dry

If your hair is covered, why are you combing your hair?

I would think that you might want to work on this habit. Especially, depending on the type of comb that you use may cause more breakage. Does it have a seam? Is it plastic?  This could effect the amount of breakage in your hair.

So to answer your question, you don' t have to comb your hair everyday or all the time.Smile

No, all that combing is definitely not necessary or beneficial.

The combing twice a day isn't good for your hair.

Thank you everyoneSmile I thought I was asking a silly question.
Although I do get to the point where my hair is so healthy and moisturized I can comb it without one bit of breakage thats only when Ive been looking after my hair for a long period of time.

When nursing my hair back to health I was in that inbetween stage where its getting more moisure but its still fragile because of recent dryness so my liccle ends would break off.Cry

It makes more sense now after your advice, ill carry on with the regime

Hey Love59,
Before I started my journey, all I used were plastic combs too. I didn't know there were different variations.   Some people just file the seam between the teeth of a plastic comb down. However, if you miss a spot it can snag or break your hair.

There are various types of seamless combs, you can get horn combes, bone combs or even wooden seamless combs.      I have only used the horn comb and it has worked well for me.  Others might be able to give information on their experiences as well.

I got my horn comb from a seller on Ebay last year from Heavenly Harvest Inc.  I have heard of people purchasing them on here and  from  tenderheaded.com.
