Hi, Im thinking about touching up my own roots but dont know what the best method is. How do you divide up the hair, what type of comb. I need to get good coverage as I have greying bits now. Thanks for your advise

i use a rat tail comb to section my hair, claw clips to keep my hair clipped up out of the way as i work on each section, and i start at the nape of my neck and work my way up...i use a short-bristled hair coloring brush and just paint the color on the roots

do you also put some mix on the rest of your hair as the colour really fades thanks

It sounds silly, but using the tip of a tint bottle to move your hair around works pretty well too.

Yeah, that's what I do, just use the tip of the bottle to part and squirt along the part at the same time, then just rub it around with my hand once a whole section of my head is done. Just make sure you make a part about one centimeter away from the part you just did - done in a minute.

Susan you have obviously done a lot of colouring, I coloured my head all over 4 times in one year using a permanent and on the 4th time my hair was breaking off frighteningly, now I am very wary. I recently went to the hairdresser who carefully coloured and highlighted but the cost is really too much for me to keep up so am looking at doing it myself. My mistake was to colour my whole head each time instead of doing the roots. I wonder though how much damaged is caused by putting the mix on the rest of the hair (after roots) even for just 5 minutes as this would be done every 6-8 weeks and the hair would be getting this chemical treatment over and over.

How hard is it getting the back roots done, I am guessing you would need 2 mirrors?
