I've been having my hair heavily highlighted for several years, and it's very damaged at this point due to that and blowdrying & straightening. I'm wanting to go back to my natural haircolor, which is dark blonde with a slight red tint.
I've read that haircolor sold in Wal-Mart, etc. is harsher than professional formulas sold in stores such as Sally's Beauty Supply. Is this true?
And if so, any recommendations as to what pro. brands, colors I should buy?
I called Clairol's number and they told me I need 2 bottles of Nice N Easy 108 (I have long hair) and 1 bottle of 106A.
I'm anxious to go buy something and get this done, but I don't want to make any mistakes.
Any suggestions appreciated!

I think all hair color can be damaging if used incorrectly.It is all chemicals....saying that a more expensive brand is less damaging then the walmart brand seems a bit biased in my opinion. Anyhow,you are going darker,which is somewhat less damaging then going lighter. Clairol usually gives pretty good advice. I called them when going from blonde to brown and everything they said worked. Go for it! Just dont feel discouraged if your color fades in a couple weeks.It may take a few times before it really sticks to your hair. Color on highlighted bleached hair tends to wash out faster. So you may have to color more then once. Let us know how you like it!!! |

Do a STRAND TEST!! Jules has had good experiences with the Clairol hotline; however, I had 1 experience and it was a disaster. As with any coloring, always do a strand test. ------------- Strand test, strand test, strand test! |

hi,
all hair color is basically the same...the thing with wal mart is you don't get to custom mix your formula and you always get 20 volume developer. also, they have to add alot more stabilizers to make the color more shelf stable, and that can affect the color.
as for going darker, be sure to use 10 volume only. don't add in any red AT ALL!!!! you will end up pink at this point. do a strand test for sure. you will have alot of fadage after about 2 weeks. you can safely recolor your hair in about 4 weeks.
condition the hair with something professional, it tends to be heavier and more conditioning than the sally's stuff.

oh, also, make sure the color has a golden base to it. believe me...you don't want any ash in the formula. look for the letters g or d, stay away from a or s. read the formula color to make sure it says neutral or golden or something like that...no cools or ash. ------------- "For I know the plans I have for you," says the Lord, "plans for good, and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope" Jer 29:11 |

you do not have to add in red!!!
i have been doing color for 11 years, and when i do a tint back i only add in gold...that way the color turns a pretty shade of brown instead of a reddish brown.
besides, she wants to be a dark blonde, not brown, red at this level would be a huge mistake.

No need to get excited Txsgirl,but I think if you read alot of the threads on here you will see that almost ALL the stylists recommend adding in the red first.Just do a search and see for yourself. And she said her natural color was dark blonde WITH A SLIGHT RED TINT TO IT. She called Clairol anyways and THEY told her what to use.108 is I believe a reddish blonde.So it will not be to drastic,and her hair will not turn pink. |

I'm not disagreeing that it CANT be done...but there are less likely to be "at home bloopers" when you add the red back in. From my own exprience I know this to be true. Without adding in some red (or even gold as you said) I have come out with green hair before. I dont think monkeehugz will have a problem doing what Clairol told her to do though. I followed almost the exact same advice a few months ago and had good results. Now I want to go back to light though!  |

i cannot tell you how many time i have gone dark, only to get out my tub-o-bleach to go back blonde...many times within a two week period. i am resigned to always being some type of blonde. next time i want to go dark i will buy a wig!!!!

LOL,about the buying a wig thing. I wanted to know what my natural color was after not having known it for 15 years...turns out it's not so great. It has been about 6 months since I went darker...It looks ok,just think I'm generally happier as a blonde. Any advice on how to do it? I was gonna use Clairol born blonde (it is like bleach I think) and then use a toner. If it turns orangish,I was gonna color over it with an ash blonde (as I've done in the past) I'm a little scared..I dont want anything to go wrong.But my hair has been trimmed pretty short and is very healthy from not really being colored much the last couple of months,so I'm fairly confident it will go well. Plus,I was going to use a protein filler first to minimize the damage. |

good idea with the protein treatment, it will even out the porosity. i like redken ppt. as for born blonde, i think it is a bleach..i know that sally's carried a line of liquid toners called "born blonde" that we used in beauty school...they work great just kind of a mess cause they are very liquidy, as far as i can remember. as for going back to blonde, apply the bleach to your hair, and keep off your roots, then when it reaches a light orange stage, brush bleach onto roots then process to light yellow. rinse, condition, and tone. at least that is how i would do it in the salon.
kudos to you on letting your natural color grow out! it's quite a shock how dark it really is...i keep forgetting that my much younger days as a natural blonde were over before i turned 10!! but for some reason it always astounds me when my roots grow in (almost) black!!
now, if only someone would invent a pill to grow hair in our desired color, that someone would be a trillionairre!!

A pill to change colors? That would be awesome... I decided not to bleach anyways...I was looking at pictures thinking darker went better with my skin tone. However,give me a month or two and I may change my mind again! (no wonder when I bleached before it didnt turn out right~I had always put it on the roots with the rest of my hair and ended up with 3 different colors! yikes!) |

Yeah I like Born Blonde toners, they're nice because they're temporary and use no developer, so you can change the blonde you want very easily |
