Or you could hit the hard brush then transfer to the soft. The hard brush has the speed but causes "crooked" waves. The soft straightens waves out.

When you say soft, med or hard...are you going by your own touch or are the brushes labeled?  Like a Phillips #540 re-inforced boar bristle or #440 ect.  Is the #540 soft, med or hard? It doesn'tsay.  I have three.  Two feel harder than one.  Are there specific brushes I should be looking for?  Annie 2080 or 2081, Diane 8118 or 8167.  I have searched and found that people are using brushes with numbers, but what I'm asking is...If I grab a brush that to my touch feels medium and its actually a hard am I making it harder on myself?

That's what's up.  I just got a double sided Annie 2071 before I saw your post.  It seems okay.  I'm brushing now.
