A little history about my hair... Colored myself at home for about a year, naturally med-dk brown with red highlights. Colored with Med to Light reddish brown ION from Sally's.
Decided I wanted more blonde/highlights and to get away from the red....something cooler for my pink/pale complexion. So I went to a professional....first got highlights (copper...not cool I know...didn't communicate well with stylist) and base was done still in a lighter reddish brown...that's pic 1, but at this point ready for touch up.

 Since I was going in for a touch up, decided to try to address the issue of too much warmth...add more highlights, but wanted a cooler look overall. That was this weekend and pic 2,3 & 4 show what I ended up with....base and highlights re-done (more highlights added) but to me it still looks too.....something...gold, orange? I'm thinking more along the lines of an ash or dirty blonde....but I'm not seeming to get it. What do I need to do now? My goal eventually is to be totally blonde, but not with the shades I'm getting now....I need something cool. Maybe I'm not communicating correctly to the stylists?

I really like the color you have now, but if you want to go for a lighter blonde here's what I'd do...
Have your stylist bleach heavier lighter blonde highlights throughout your hair. Then start bleaching and toning the roots to match those highlights. Remember that toning is essential to a nice shade of blonde when blonding. Eventually you will have the color you want.
Here's another option, but harder since you have highlights blended with the rest of the hair...use colorfix to remove the color out of your hair then bleach the entire head till it's pale yellow and tone with the proper toner. This would be much more damaging than the above option.
Good luck...
Oh and to help communicate with your colorist...bring her a picture of the exact color you want and show it to her. But again, I do like the color you have now quite a bit.

I also like your hair,but agree the highlights are GOLDEN and not ash. I would do one of two things. 1) Next time you go back to the stylist, point out how it looks more GOLDEN to you and that you'd like it an ash/dirty blonde color. 2) Find a new stylist,this one may not be listening to you. |

I always tell my stylist I don't want ANY "gold" in my hair. NO GOLD/NO WARMTH! Maybe that'll work? I think you'll look good as a blonde!  |

| I know what you are going through, I had highlights and lowlights put in. The highlights were a blonde and the lowlights ended up being a golden blonde, yuck, I looked gingery. Anyway, I just went back to get my roots done and said I wasnt happy with the lowlight colour as I really wanted it to be more my natural shade (dark blonde/brown) To make this change she put a toner in my hair. I went home with wet hair not really knowing the final result. When it dried I was dismayed that the front end portion of my hair was greyish!! Yikes, so I headed off to another hairdresser today and got quite a lot chopped off. So now I have bangs instead of one length hair. Im feeling quite relieved. A bit pissed that I paid for a botch job (I can do that myself!) Anyway just wanted to warn you. I agree taking in a picture with the colour you want is probably a good idea. |

| Usually a toner will make your blonde hair look grey if it's left one too long but it washes out rather quickly. It's happened to me before but I never care because it's gone the first time I wash it. |

Hi there, i am a hairdresser and what i would do personally is do a very gentle cleansing shampoo (1 scoop of bleach, 3 pumps of shampoo and 60 ml of warm water) on wet hair, this is very very gentle but will cleanse out the heavy tones. gradually lightning the overall color. (your stylist should know how to do this. ) Keeping the roots til last however as there is less color on the roots. i would suggest this to your stylist or go to one that will. then once the overall color is lifted a few shades, dry and highlight were you want the lighter bit with an ash tone. i use wella as i love their colors. 12/1 would give you a perfect cool blonde with out bleach. then whilst the foils are developing apply an ash brown something like a 8/1 throughout the rest of your hair. this will darken your hair slightly and cool down any underlying pigments that were exposed during the cleansing shampoo. this will give you something like this: Hope this helps x  |
