This may be a dumb question, but I have really really thick curly hair that can be straightened with some frizz control and a flat iron. But it takes sooo long to do all of my hair. I was wondering if caucasian (white people) can get a relaxer for their hair?

There are several different ways to straighten hair. True relaxers have 'lye' (sp?) and they are made for 'black' hair. They are mostly too strong for caucasion hair although they can be used if applied by a skilled stylist.
Most caucasion straightening products are basically 'perms' or permanent waves which are combed into the hair and they will straighten the hair.
Depending on the courseness of your hair, it may be possible to use a true relaxer but I would check with a skilled stylist for that.

What you are looking for is called Thio(Thioglycolate) relaxer. It is actually a texturizer and it is designed for curly, wavy or caucasian hair. There are several good products out there: Rusk Radical Anti-curl, Redken Vertical, L'oreal X-tenso, Matrix Opti-smooth. They are all professional treatments. Do some reseach to find out if there are any reputable salons in your area that offer the service.
Stay away from lye (sodium hydroxide) relaxers, or calcium hydroxide relaxes. They are not really designed for your hair type and won't produce the results you are looking for anyway.
Thio, will produce soft shiny hair, that will be much easier to straighten, but you will still be able to wear your hair curly or wavy if you want to. The waves or curls will just be looser, smoother and shinier.

I have naturally thick wavy, curly hair also. All my life I wanted nothing more then smooth, shinny straight hair. ( We always want what we don't have!). My hair is also unruly, which means that no matter what I did to it ( blow dry, flat iron, products etc etc) it always seemed frizzy and dry. I tried Rusk Anti-curl ( level 3) with my hair dresser. I LOVED IT!. It tamed the frizz, it made my hair more managable. I was able to get out of shower and blow dry gently and still have straight hair that was so much less frizzy!. I don't know why, but for some reason, I found that my hair appeared to be more healthy after using this product with my hair dresser between colorings every 3-5 months. It's strange to say, but my hair just seemed to be in better condition. I wouldn't do this yourself, although the product is available to you through various stores. I think that if you leave it on just 1 minute too long , it could easily ruin the results. It worked for me and I love it. |
