Hey!
I'm a "newbie" as everyone seems to say and I really need some advice... I am biracial (half black, half white) and everyone that has ever had anything to do with my hair has pretty much messed it up!! My mother is white and my aunt is a beautician. Bless their hearts, I know they tried, but their super-fine straight-as-a-board hair knowledge did nothing but hurt me. My hair is not necessarily "black" I guess because it is very curly but not very coarse... I don't really know how to classify it... Anyway! For the past 5 or 6 years I have been wearing my hair just curly and natural, trying to undo some of the damage, but I think maybe the time has come to try another straight look... I want to get a color and a relaxer... Is that a good idea?!
About my hair care routine, in case you need to know, I wash my hair every other day (it gets REALLY oily if I don't), use a leave in conditioner after washing, a deep protein treatment once a week, and let it air dry since I'm letting it curl for now. It's pretty soft and manageable, but it does break on occassion. I'm just afraid that if I go and get the straight, red look I want all of my hard work will have been for nothing... I think I just need some guidance from someone who knows what they're talking about... Like I said, my mom tried but she just had no clue! Any advice would be really helpful!
Thanks!

Erica you can relax and dye your hair red. Some products let you do them both the same day. It is permanent and you don't sound ready to make that leap. Why not use a semi permanent in the color you want and blow dry and/or flat iron your hair for a couple of months until you're sure. If you flat iron your hair instead of relaxing it you can always go back and forth from curly to straight. Once you relax your hair your curls are gone forever.

Thanks for the advice! I found a really good stylist locally who was very helpful. I just got a few highlights and a lighter brown rather than the red and decided to wait on the relaxer. My stylist, Sheila, said to wait on the relaxer b/c my hair was so damaged. But she said in about 6 weeks we could do one just so knock out some of the frizz leaving the curl. I'll keep you posted... thanks!

she said she could do that with a relaxer? Do you mean a texturizer? They are going to change the texture of your hair permanently not just get rid of frizz. A texturizer may loosen your curls some but it's never going to be the way it is now again. She can control your frizz with product.

I agree with mshoney you can get rid of frizz with products rather than a chemical...have you been to %20 - http://www.naturallycurly.com/curltalk/index.php they have great advise and information about curly hair. Co-washes and fantasia gel could help with the frizz. IMO you should try out products first before changing your hair chemically. HTH
