I wanted to add, the silicone is GE Silicone I it says 100% silicone.  For those without a sewing machine, craft stores and online sell mini ones for around $10-15.  All you are looking for is a straight locking stitch.  The plastic is any really hard plastic, a credit card would work or the like.
