Cryso i just took out my hair extensions done with fusion and my hair is 3 inches shorter. my natural hair was just a lil below bra strap and now its a lil below my shoulders. i almost cried when i looked into the mirror bc my hair has never been this short Cry

ive only heard stories of hair ex. making hair thinner but not shorter. do u think it could of been bc of a product i put in my hair or the new flat iron i got??Confused

i got some clips in from a store near me and guna wear them until my hair grow at least an inch and then im DONE WITH HAIR EXTENSIONS FOREVER.

just thought i would share my horrible story!

I'm so sorry you had a bad experience. How long were they left in? That can cause problems if they are left in too long.Or if too much extension hair was placed on your real hair.Fusion isnt easy, and if done incorrectly can have bad results.Which is why I have personally avoided it.I know there are some really good extensionists out there, but I dont want to take that chance. Is your hair broken short in places? or is it thinner by chance.I'm trying to figure out if the bonds pulled out or broke off of your hair?

On the brighter side of things, many of us here(myself included) have had luck growing our hair while using extensions. There are much gentler methods out there that will give you the same great look(sometimes better) as fusion.I think the clip-ins are a good idea until you figure this out though.good luck.Smile

I agree on fusion, it was the worse method for me and my thin hair.  I did it myself too, and maybe I wasn't so good at it. But since I started to use Protac, my own hair has started to grow again! I am so glad about that.
If you have naturally long hair, I wouldn't try extensions though, the reason why I wear extensions is because my own hair is so thin and fragile that there is no way that I would be able to have the length and volume I have now with extensions, no matter how careful I would be

so glad that the protac worked for you frenchie, because ladies with fine fragile hair have to be so careful, i know, i am one of them

hi longhairdreams,
i had them in since mid january and when i got them they were painful  but that went away after a week (i think thats when the damage happened i just didnt notice it Confused)
in some places my hair is still long but most of it looks like its been broken off bc my hair is still the same thickness.
well good luck with growing out ur hair Smile how long do u want them?

frenchie, is protac the tape method? does it feel heavy and is it easy to take out? im really trying to stay away from any kind of glue...

Honestly, I don't think the length of your hair being shorter is from extensions. It sounds like it broke from whatever you're doing, ie: flat iron, bleach, etc.

I have to agree with Malibu on this one. I dont think extensions would break the length of your hair. If you are bleaching your hair that may be the culprit and cobined with flatironing, yeah thats more likely the cause.

Certain flat irons will do that in a heartbeat.  Breakage at the top could be bad extensions but bottom can easily be a flat iron.  I tossed mine and my neighbor took it and I noticed her hair got shorter & shorter.  Invest in a good iron.  Tourmaline and ionic are good, I use the solia from http://www.folica.com - www.folica.com .  Also use a heat protector.

yeah ive never heard anyones hair breaking off from hair extensions either. well im pretty sure its not the bleach and the flat iron bc i only bleach my roots when i get my hair done and ive been flat ironing for a long time and never had problem with that much breaking off. i mean i lost 3 inches in 2 months doesnt seem possible u know...

i can think of one possibility: i got this stuff from sallys thats called porclaim super bond oil to remove my extensions and i never  bothered reading the back of the bottle until now and it says in bold letters not to use on damaged  or bleached hair. do u think this could of caused the breakage??? this is the only possibility i can think of rite now..what do u guys think...

a lady that was being a bitch to me from the minute i walked in to sallys recommended it, i probably shouldnt of listened to her :(

Angelica you most certainly can damage your hair from excessive use of heated appliances, and most certainly from heated appliances which are non-ceramic..

The type of breakage you describe could not have come from the hair extensions themselves. If the extensions were to cause ANY breakage, you would see it at the roots near where the extension is attached to your hair..

The breakage you describe is near the middle to the end of the hair shaft (you say you lost 3 inches). Based on the location and the kind of breakage that you describe, all of this tells me that it could NOT be from the extensions..  The super bond oil probably did not cause the damage either.. IF that product was indeed damaging enough to bleached hair to 'cause breakage, your hair would have broken at the roots -- where by your own words is the only place where you say you bleach.

In short, SOMETHING in your haircare routine is causing the damage you see, and at this point (since you are rejecting the advice here), pehaps it's time to seek the advice of a professional hair stylist who can see and analyze your hair up close and in person. An experienced professional can offer ways to get things back on track for you.. Good luck.. HTH..

I agree with Divavocals.

Also look at any change in your hair care products and appliances.  Did you change conditioner, shampoo.  As far as the flat iron, maybe it is going bad and it's getting too hot if it's getting older? I'm not sure I don't manufacture them or use them consistently.  I have no idea what brand you are using, how often and such.  What about a new blow dryer?  Look at any and all changes you've made since it started.

Write down the details of how you care for your hair A to Z and have a professional help you out.

You know what Angelica, now that I think about it when I had fusion done the first time the girl installed them and then said she was just going to cut my hair a bit to blend. When I took the extensions out my hair was SO short! I couldn't believe it. Also, the cut was shorter on one side and all uneven.

I had the same idea malibu.I'm not familiar enough with fusion to really give much advice. But I have seen where the extensionist razored the girls natural hair along with the extensions to get them to blend.

Its very possible that if this happened that because of not being able to see just your hair, and having worn them for 3 months? that this might have been the cause? I know my hair looks a mess after razoring starts to grow out.Do you remember if she razored your hair?

I agree w/Diva
any processing can damage your hair, the more you do the weaker your hair does get it and can break.  Curling iron, flat iron, hair dryers all add to that weakness as well.
I have learned you do not keep the extentions in more then 3months

she definetely did not razor my hair. i would never let her even if she tried!

i know for sure now thats its from the extensions bc i only had extenions on the bottom like a lil below the ear and i just parted my hair this morning to put in my clip ins and the hair on top is  longer than the bottom hair. its also a lot thinner i just didnt notice bc it blended in with the top layer...i donno i guess extensions dont work for everyone...

Hello-
I have to agree with the others... I find it very hard to assume that the hair extensions would cause damage to the ENDS of your hair. Sometimes they will cause breakage toward the scalp due to incorrect installation , leaving them in too long or rough treatment- but to have the ends of your hair damaged does not add up to being the result of extensions. Never in my expeiences with any type of extensions have I seen or been made aware of any damage being done to the ends of the hair.
Probably it is from the flat ironing and long-term results of bleaching and styling. That would be my best guess. Flat irons really do a number on the hair. I use a flat iron occasionally,  and I do notice a major difference in the condition of my hair when I have been using a flat iron- even a good one.
Perhaps you are concentrating on the ends of your hair more with the flat iron to blend them with the extensions????
I am sorry to hear you have experinced this problem... I am sure it is very frustrating and disheartening to you. Hopefully with a few trims and some deep conditioning treatments you can get rid of and stay ahead of the damage done to your hair.
xx

Hi Angelica, I think DivaVocals hit the nail right on the head when she said that you're not going to listen to any of us. My advice would be not to use the clip-ins either because it's the same concept really. If you only see damage at the bottom then the clip-ins are going to damage your ends even more.

Ok- well I was just trying to help as best as I could...
Your first post indicated to me that you were quite upset about this hair breakage.. ie. you were almost crying, etc.... so I was tyring to help.
If you would like to assume that the hair extensions "ruined your hair" then ok. I am not sure why you posted and asked for advice if you had already made up your mind that that was without doubt the cause of the damage to your hair, and/or are not willing to receive advice. Too frequent use of the flat iron will break your hair off eventually. Try limiting it, I guess.....
I hope it works out for you.

no need for the attitude lil bohemian

i dint ask for advice i just said i wanted to share my horrible story to be careful with extensions and some nice girls were trying to help me figure out what happend.  if u have a prblem with me then no need to help me out  but thanks for the advice anyways.

ive been using redken hair products and chi and sedu hair straightners for the past 3 years so i really dont think $100 hair straightner would just break off 3 inches of hair in 2 months plus i didnt even iron my bottom hair bc it just blended in wit the extensions i only straightened the top.

I thought lil bohemian and everyone else for that matter were very helpful to you. Perhaps you've got the attitude. You're right. If you spend $100 on a flat iron, it won't break your hair.

Not sure if this happened to you when you had your hair put in but was there any cutting or layering done after the installation?

One thing I will never, never not ever do to myself, have done on me or do to others is layer the extensions into the natural hair after they're put in. I'll trim the ends far away from the natural hair after they're in but the layering is done off head.

My very first install I had done -- there was a host of problems but this was the major one in retrospect -- the gal razored the extensions to blend and razored a lot of my own hair right away with it. When the time came to take the install out, my own natural hair was thinned due to it being subjected to razoring. I had no thickness to begin with and none to spare at all so this was quite devastating to see my ponytail diameter and length whittled down to nothing.

Sorry about your hair. Like I said, not sure if that's what happened but I hope my own experience makes people think about their own hair being thinned out/shortened during the blending process.

no she didnt razor or cut my hair after the installation. i know what ure talking about, ive seen what my friends hair looked  like when they got it razored and it looked really bad when they took their extensions out so i didnt let her do any cutting to my hair

Maybe she cut your hair after the extensions were installed.
Just kidding.

I remember that when I was wearing fusion, installed by me, not a professional, I saw my natural hair getting shorter and shorter between installs.
I didn't have the same routine that I have now (sulfate-free shampoos, shower filter -thanks sherrie!-, heat protectant) but I believe that the strand by strand method wasnt right for me because my hair was super thin and fragile.
I love the Protac / LG method a million times more!!
And since I wear Protac and have a better routine, I see my own hair growing again.
But I need both, good method + good habits!

I think frenchie also said that she had a different routine for hair care which likely contributed to the hair getting shorter.

Yes, I really think what messed up my hair was the wrong method for me + the wrong routine
I did notice some hair loss both in volume and in length, not just in length. I think I had too much pressure on each little keratin bonds and some of my natural hair was pulled out.
But I do believe that the way you take care of your hair every day has a huge impact too.

ooo im late on this one, but i simply MUST chime in

after using clip ins, my first longer-term install for DIY was microrings....my unrefined ablity to install, my too-aggressive brushing (with the wrong brush), and already overly-bleached hair all came together in the universe to make the most horrendous discovery when i took them all out after not quite a month

i had many areas of breakage, up where the rings were installed...but the overall result was hair that looked SHORTER....there was NO mid-strand or end-of-strand breakage, but apparently my longer hairs were the ones to get pulled/broken from my crappy intall and care

i have successfully worn wefts installed with protac and Liquid Gold since then, my hair recovered.....but i also have taken steps to treat my own hair better, you can find a lot of good information on hair boutique in the 'long hair care' section.....good luck with your hair!

I wonder if I did a little damage to my hair with the few microrings I installed. Fortunately it was just a few, but those suckers HURT wearing them. I have to believe they were pulling my hair out by the roots because I hadn't installed them right. I would think that professionally installed microrings in healthy hair wouldn't cause much of a problem for most people.

i had researched a LOT about microrings because i didnt want to put anything sticky in my hair.....but my technique just sucked (even though i still thought i looked real cute!)...if i had a trustworthy pro to put them in i think it would be the method i'd still be using....i could never get used to laying my head on the pillow with them though

Hi hun

You know extensions wont danage the ends of your hair. They either would pull the hair out from the root or snap the hair at the bond

(on bad installs or removals)

I know you dont wanna hear it agen but its the bleach and flat ironing....dosent matter how long youve been bleaching it or last bleached it.
THE FACT IS bleach damages your hair regardless...and from your pic it looks platinum blonde.

M hairs naturally black and i used to bleach it to. And eventually it snapped off from the ends. Id bleached it for about 4 years, my regrowth anyway.

The blonder u go the more u damage it, with bleach u gotta remember ur STRIPPING your hair.....ur opening the cuticle and removing the color. It weakens it incredibly. Its probably snapped off like mine did, tho i took good care.

U might benefit to go a shade darker and cut ur hair a little shorter. Use clip in extensions for now. If u gonna stay really blonde then keep ur natural hair short, having bleached short hair is much better as its cut regularly. Fact is its pretty imposible to have thick, long bleached hair...
