Hi,
I do not know much about coloring hair. I used to be naturally golden blonde. A little over a year ago I darkened my hair twice professionally. The first time came out real ashy so my hairdresser darkened it more of a brown and I didn't dye it again. Since then it seems like my hair has permanentely darkened. I got pregnant and took prenatals which I was told darkens your hair. I would like to go lighter again. I went to a new hairdresser in december and asked her to lighten my hair but she said I needed low lights also to make it look natural. She put brown lowlights in my hair. I went back to her in feburary and told her that I wanted my hair lighter and she put the brown lowlights with a few streaks of almost platinum highlights. (I want all of my hair lighter, not just lighter highlights) This hair dresser is out on maternity leave and I need to get my hair done so I will have to go to someone who is not familiar with my hair. Is there a difference in bleach and dye? Will this damage my hair bad since I just had it highlighted? I blow dry my hair like twice a week and have to flat iron the front since I have wave when I want it straight. Any suggestions?

Bleach removes the hairs natural hair pigment making it white, you can only lighten dark hair above the depth of a 6 dark blonde with bleach. Permanent hair colour deposits colour molucles into the hair cortex, swells and stays there permanently or until cut. The only way to remove unwanted colour/tones is by using a colour fix, which when applied to the hair penatrates into the hairs cortex shrinking the artificail hair colour molucles making them small enough to be washed out the hair. Usually this will leave your hair an orangy colour but dont panic, as this is normal. A colour you do like as you said lighter can then be applied. I hope this explains a little, without being to technicail.
As your hair has already had bleached hi-lights, it will probably be a big job to correct your hair. If you are wanting an all over lighter colour, then the blonde hi-lights will need pre-pigmented(colour fill) to replace the red that the bleach has taken out of your hair. Complex stuff, but it can be sorted.

Can I also say, when my client comes to me with a colour their not to sure about, I always recommend a semi-permanent colour first as this washes out in anything up to 15-18 shampoos, so its not permanent. Bleach does cause damage to the hair, permanent colour can too, but not to the same degree as bleach, best stick with semi, or demi colours, more gentle on the hair. Do you use a heat protector when drying and straighning your hair, as this will also protect your hair from heat damage.
