I've always had really healthy, thick, light ash brown hair. For whatever reason I decided to completely ruin it when I was about 14. I started dyeing it all sorts of colors using box dyes. Well, I never really had a problem with damage (despite repeatedly dyeing it to blonde, burgundy, almost black, and all different shades of brown) till recently in the past year or so I started using the cheap Revlon dyes which completely murdered my hair .
I tried pretty much everything I could afford to try and repair it, but it simply doesn't work. My hair used to be about halfway down my back, and it was very thick. Well, because of the permanet dyes I've had to cut significant amounts at a time (about 4" the last time I cut it), and now my hair won't grow much at all. It's a few inches past my shoulders and it's been that way for at least six months. It's also very thin at the ends.
I did all sorts of deep conditioning and protein treatments which only work a little bit. I also started using professional products (waste of money), different heat protectants (no help). I also quit blowdrying my hair or doing anything to it really. Nothing works.
It still looks awful, there is breakage and split ends all over the place. I don't want to cut it all off, but I know that I will have to trim it constantly till my natural color grows out. It's gonna take forever, but yea... I guess I did this to myself.
Anyway, now I've realized that no matter how much I cut it, I will continue getting split ends and there is absolutely nothing I can do but wait it out a couple of years.
I definitely DO NOT like short hair on me, it looks awful because of the shape of my face. I've had short hair all my life and in the past 5 or so years I've managed to grow it out long for the first time in my life. I love it and I want to keep it long. But since I can't have that naturally at this point I've considered getting extentions.
The only problem is that I'm pretty broke at this point (college student )... so I can't afford to get that done professionally. I blew off a couple of hundred on professional hair products which obviously didn't work at all... and I don't see that much difference from the store bought cheap junk... at least not at this point since my hair is all screwed up.
So I'm basically wondering if there is a cheaper alternative. Where can I get quality extentions that aren't overpriced yet still look natural? (I know they have them at Sally Beauty Supply, but I didn't really look at them.)
Also I have no clue how to use them or how they work. I've done a search online at a particular extention site, but it's not very helpful since I've never even considered doing this till now.
If someone with a lot of experience with using extentions could recommend something and describe how the process works, who to care for them, and how long they last that would be really awesome.
Thanks!
