I was just wondering about cap highlights. Do you think it would be Ok if I did them myslef for touch up instead of going to the salon as often?
When you do them, do you just do the dark part (roots) that you pull through or eveything.
If you just do the roots, does it all blend in?

I have done a number of highlights using a cap, using it is really easy and you can get some very good results at home. When doing a roots retouch, I just pull the roots through the cap into a small loop. Closely watch the timing and it will match the rest the hair perfectly. The best web site I know of to read about using the highlighting cap is: http://www.robertcraig.com/ultrablond.html - http://www.robertcraig.com/ultrablond.html It has photos of the various steps (including touching up the roots). Check it out and see if it is something you would be comfortable doing yourself.

Thanks. But what I was wondering was. You know how when you get highlights, they are streaks of blonde hair, but it kinda looks like you have streaks of your natural color too.
When you do a retouch with a cap, how do you know you aren`t accidently coloring a root or piece of your natural hair color blonde. I don`t want to have a blonde root with the end my natural color. Do you know what I mean? Or does it blend in?

Oops. Sorry. I misunderstood your original question. I think I got it now. If the original highlight was done with a cap, the retouch with a cap will blend in. On the other hand, if the original highlight was done freehand (using weaves of sections of various widths of hair or even "painted" in using a brush) then the retouch should be done using the same method and it is a bit trickier. The cap highlighting I have done was fairly easy to retouch and the roots matched the ends (especially since a trim usually takes place first). Hope I got it right this time!!

But how do you make sure you select the same strands that were picked before? Isn`t it hard to see which ones were highlighted under the cap?

The caps are generally translucent (some are clear) and you can see the highlighted hair through it. It is important to have the hair brushed/combed in the same way as it was during the original highlighting. You don`t want of the highlights hidden from you when you retouching them.

I had my highlights done with foils, do you think a cap retouch will work? I just don`t want to spend alot of money to get it redone as much as I should. I was thinking I could do the roots myself then then next time go back to the salon. ALternate between myself and there to save money.

I have never done a cap retouch on foil highlights. Generally, though not always, foil highlights are a bit wider than the cap highlights so it might be a challenge to get all of the roots through the cap hole. I would think some help would be required. I think it can be done, I`ve just never done it (nor seen it done). I think it depends on just how much of your hair is highlighted and where they are. I can understand you wanting to save some money and wish I could be of more help. Sorry. If you decide to give it a try, I would be most interested in the results. Good luck!!!
