Hey, so I'm a teenage guy, and naturally I know hardly anything about hair    So I need some help from the best!

I have long, black curly hair, and when it does its "cool thing" I get compliments all the time. This is when it comes down in awesome ringlets or locks, im not sure what the right term is. I find that when I add product (Paul Mitchell Skinny Serum), the hair creates these curls after a while. But most of the time my result is just greasy oily hair. I need loads of advice , I've tried other forums and I can't find anything specific enough.

I'm so confused because half the time I hear "You have the most awesome hair ever!" and half the time I hear "Dude, your hair is really geasy". And sometimes if I just don't add any product, it gets really frizzy.

I'm currently using Paul Mitchell's shampoo and conditioner, and I use it every day. How many times should I wash my hair during the week? Morning shower vs. night shower? How much of this stuff should I use? Can I get my hair dry without messing it up? (It takes so long for my hair to dry) How do I put in my product for the best, non-frizzy, non-greasy amount? Should I comb my hair? (I usually don't).

I know this stuff is a lot, but I am in desperate need of help. Any advice someone could offer would be highly appreciated

Thanks so much!

Let me see if I can answer your questions in order.....
1. how often to wash
I usually shampoo my hair twice a week, on the in between days, I just wet it in the shower and put some conditioner on it.

2. morning vs. night
I prefer night because that gives it time to dry before I have to go anywhere.

3. drying
I always air-dry.  Always.  No matter what.  The less the hair is handled while drying, the less frizz there'll be, and the curls will form better.  Use a towel to squeeze the water from your hair (squeeze, don't rub!) then don't touch it.

4. products
It's possible that the styling product you're using is making your hair greasy.  You're probably using too much.  Try using less of it, or try a different product.  Using your palms, gently smooth it through your hair without running your fingers through it.  (I prefer simple aloe vera gel.  I apply it when my hair is mostly dry.)  If there's some frizzy spots, you can do spot touch-up by misting a little water on it with a spray bottle and smoothing it down.

5. combing
No combing.  The only time I ever comb my hair is directly before washing.  It is good to comb your hair, don't get me wrong.  It helps stimulate scalp circulation and increase healthy hair growth.  But don't comb it while styling, it separates the curls and causes major frizz.

Hope that helps you out some!  How long is your hair?

my hair reaches down to my neck, but usually bunches up a little highe than that when it gets the desired curly effect.

the problem for me with washing at night is that it seems like the hair is greasy again by morning. maybe I should get a new kind of shampoo or something. at any rate, thanks for the help :D
