I am fairly new as well to hair extensions, and you definitely have a good start by searching on a forum for research and answers!
What type of extensions are you seeking? The clip-in type that you take out at night, or something more "permanent" that will last you weeks? Are you looking for a salon to install them, or doing it yourself?
My first start was with clip-ins that I made myself. I too, went to Sally's and bought some hair and supplies. Thru the great gift of the internet, I learned how to make them myself.
Take the time and read the posts under HE 101 with the FAQs. You will find plenty of others that are newbies like us, and plenty of experienced talent that will help with even the minor questions. There is so much more to it than just attaching hair. There is the method that you are interested in, the texture of your own hair to match extension hair. A lot of members on the forum seem to have their own favorites of hair and methods, and that is mainly due to it matching their own hair texture, and the experience with various install methods. I've learned that there isn't necessarily a "best method" nor "best hair", at the end of the day it's what method works for you and your lifestyle, and what hair texture matches your own.
The best advice I can give at this time, is to read posts on the forums, and look to see what possible method could work for you.
