This is an open-ended question. Just curious where you're at in terms of your length goals for your hair.

Are you in the process of growing your hair longer? How long is your hair and much longer before you reach your goal length? Have you already reached your goal? Or maybe surpassed your goal?

I'll start. Well, my only real goal was just below "classic" length (a few inches shy of fingertip length). Oops, looks like I surpassed my goal. My hair is really thin near the ends and I'd like the ends to be thicker but I haven't been inclined to trim any of the length from it so... for now it's just below my knees.

Okay, your turn.

Congrats on growing past your goal, DaveDecker!

I did reach my 1st goal of waist length, but I got a trim, and that put me behind. I should reach waist length again by the end of June(I hope). After that, I'll try tailbone.

It's great to have you as a moderator Dave. I read your post about the knee-length hair...incredible!

In high school (and again in college) grew my hair out to about bra strap length. I love that length and although I don't plan to grow it out that long again (I'm at shoulder length and aiming for about three inches longer) I still fondly recall my long-haired days. Here's a (albeit bad) photo of me with long hair when I was about 16:

I started growing my hair about 2 years ago. Now, it's about mid-back-length. My stylist thinks my hair grows pretty fast. I get trims every month. At least I try to every month. I can't wait. I am really excited. I just need to take care of it. It's kinda dry from coloring.

Are you guys taking anything? Some type of supplements maybe? Any suggestions? I am new to this board and I am really happy to have found it. Thanks!

Wow, knee-length hair, that's amazing!

I guess I've never really set a length goal, it's just always been long (well, almost always anyway).
My hair is currently bra-strap length - same as Lyris in her high school picture - and when I tilt my head back my hair touches my waist which feels kinda nice, so I'm thinking about setting a goal, but I haven't decided yet.

My goal is to see what the terminal length of my hair actually is.
If I don't cut it ever again, as part of the natural cycling of hair, all the strands that have a blunt cut end should eventually be replaced with virgin hair with it's naturally tapered end.
That's my goal.
A head full of hair that has never been cut, allowed to reach it's terminal length - whatever that might be.
I feel a bit like a "lone rider" on this one, though....do you know anyone else on the same "quest" Dave?

Hello? Anyone wanna join me in the Quest for the Hairy Grail?

Amanda Panda -- good luck on your goal(s)!

Lyris, you and your hair are beautiful! So your statement, "I love that length and although I don't plan to grow it out that long again..." makes me wonder "why not?" Care to share?

Welcome to the board, Crazy Girl! Your hair must grow fast if you've been growing it out and still getting *monthly* trims. Supplements? Start with a good vitamin/mineral base (daily multi), and go from there. Hairtopia and UltraNourisHair are helpful. I've found silica (horsetail extract) to be very helpful in reducing fallout.

Isla, sounds like you enjoy your hair. Kewl.

Uzma, I have sort of done as you've described -- letting it grow with infrequent trims ... I know several other people who are doing the same. I wish you much success on your quest!

Hi Dave,

As much as I loved having long hair, it just didn't look healthy after awhile. My hair is naturally very wavy and I straighten it with a brush and dryer every 2-3 days. Unfortunately this wreaks havoc on it! I find that once my hair gets about 4 inches below the shoulders it starts to look frayed and fried. I'd just rather have shorter but healthier-looking hair. My other pet peeve was that it too forEVER to dry! However I am definitely looking forward to having longer hair in the future (we're only talking about 3 inches past the shoulders, but that's more than I've got now!) By this fall/winter it should be there. Thanks for asking! :-)

I haven't reached my goal of tailbone length yet, buy I'm working on it . Then from there, who knows?

My hair is about 5" from my waist after 3 years of growing it out from a very short layered cut, which was a result of chopping off 2 feet (I had no choice). I'll NEVER do that again.

And by the way, I am a guy also. My wife says she hates my hair, but she does braid it for me and dries it now and then.

Anyway, I'll quit rambling. Here's a link to my pic:

Hi Lyris,

Ah, the tradeoff between healthy hair and styled hair. Today a colleague told me essentially the same story. As regards the hairdrying time... I guess I am not at all concerned with it. Good thing, too. Cause it does take awhile to dry, depending on temp and humidity, as much as 4-5 hours, longer if in a braid. Hope you reach that year-end goal!

Welcome to the board, IowaBiker! Bummer you had to cut your hair against your wishes. But that's great progress you've made since then.

My hair was about at my waist until last weekend. The ends were dry and split, and I kept on getting nasty tangles about 4 inches up from the ends, no matter what conditioner I used. And I wasn't even doing any styling to my hair. I was getting very frustrated with the knots I was getting, and so I decided to cut some of it off.
The back of it is now at my bra strap, and the front is "feathered" around my face. I don't know if that is the correct word or not. This way I still have the "longish hair" look, but I can still do something with it. And it feels/looks SOOO much softer and better.
I am going to let it grow out again (I think) and see if the same problems happen that I had before, if I do, I'll keep it around this length. My goal is to let it be as long as it wants, as long as it is healthy!!!
It just seems much shorter to me, since it was cut, but everyone who has short hair tells me it is still long

Mine is currently at my shoulders, but I started growing it out last May from a clipped at the nape cut. I measured it and from May of last year until now, April, it has grown 7 inches. it has been trimmed only twice during that time. Once in October and once just a week ago. Very little (1/8) trimmed at those times. I only went in for trims when I notices it wasn't looking healthy anymore and was very surprised to see that I could go so long in between trims. My first goal is 26"(3 inches above my waist) - it is 18" right now. Then I will set another goal after that.

Hi,

My hair feels...at least to me...to be stalled about 4 inches below my waist. It brushes the top of my tailbone. The weird thing......is that I don't FEEL like I have long hair. One of my good long haired friends told me she has the same problem and she calls it "hair-anorexia". She said that some people who have really long hair for a really long time don't feel like it is long.

That is definitely how I feel.

I developed a thyroid problem a couple of years ago that is now controlled very well by medication but my hair basically slowed to a halt for about the last year. It appears to grow a little bit (because I still get roots from my highlights) but not nearly like it used to. I know I don't sleep as much or eat as good as I should so that coupled with my crazy stressful life has a lot to do with it. I also am not as religious about taking my Viviscal or hair vitamins as I should be. Yes, they are sitting on my desk but I forget to take them or take them sporadically, which doesn't do much good. :-)

When I was on the Fat Flush food plan last year I did notice my hair waking up and acting like it was going to grow again but when I stopped eating well my hair seemed to stall again.

Anyway, I hope that my hair eventually reaches my knees like Dave's but I am not going to stress about it if I can help it. :-)

Great topic & thanks to Dave for waking this sleepy board up. :-)

Best wishes,
Karen

I've had a few length goals; the first one was waist length, and most recently, classic length. My main goal is to have quality as well as quantity. My most recent length goal has been re-achieved after having about an inch cut off last month. If pulled to the front, the longest part of my hair is to the beginning of my thumb, hanging down in back it's to the middle of my palm. My next goal is to my fingertips, which will be about 4-6 inches longer. My quality goal is constantly being worked on because I've only learned how to properly care for my hair over the last year and a half or so. The quantity (horizontal volume) has increased noticeably, and compared to how it looked a year and a half ago, it's in much, much better shape now.

I'm interested in seeing how long it will grow and maintaining it at a length I can handle. This is going to be an interesting project because I'm pretty sure my hair will grow to a length longer than I'll be able and want to maintain it, but at least when I decide to maintain it at that length, my ends will be thick and full, which is really important to me. I don't know what that final length will be, but I have no desire to have it any shorter than it is right now.

My hair is almost to my knees (~50") and continues to grow longer. Rather slowly these days, but that's ok - it's still *growing*.

Hi Nicole Zoie!

I struggle with this. The ends of my hair are nowhere near as thick as I would like them to be. However, I am encouraged by the results I've achieved since November 2002 with my supplementation regimen because since then my fallout rate has declined significantly. I'm hopeful that as time passes the increase in thickness is noticeable, allowing me to have the thickness at the ends that I want at the length I have.

Well, I'm sure you'll reach your goals very soon! Wish me luck on mine. And in return, good luck reaching those goals to AmandaPanda, princessmonica, Laine, Jacqui, and Karen!

I reached my first goal of waistlength and that wasn't long enough so I moved my goal to hip length. I think I may try tailbone length, but it just depends on how it looks. I don't want to have long hair just for the sake of having long hair...I want it to look like I take care of it too.

My first goal was bra strap length, which I'm currently at. (It only took almost 2 1/2 years, HF37 and TLHS for that to happen)

But my current goal is waist length, which will take a while.

Nopes, not yet.. It's currently shoulder length.. I have to grow out my layers, which might take a few more months. Then my goal will be bra strap length. I'm definitely a novice compared to other people on the forum!
