I'm a 17 year old guy and I want to grow my hair out long but I don't know if my hair type will go well with the style I want. If anyone watches Lost, i'm looking to get Sawyer's style. Here's some pics:

The only problem is, I don't think my hair type is the same as his. I used to have pin straight hair but over the years it's got to be a little wavier. For example, in the back, my hair doesn't go staright down like in the pics, it gets about 3/4 of the way down my neck then curls upward.

Is there any way to get around that? And also, do you think he has any product in his hair to make it stay flat? Did he straighten it or anything?

Does it only flip up on the ends?  If so, shoulder length hair just tends to do that naturally on some straight hair types, and the longer it gets the less it will do it.  (It rests on your neck and shoulders when it is wet, so it dries with a flip and can stay like that.  It will just hang down when it is longer, and not dry curled up on your shoulders.)  It doesn't really look like his hair has any product in it to me (first photo).  His hair type is probably just that straight.

If you hair really is wavy, and doesn't just flip up on the ends, you may find life easier if you just choose a hairstyle that is flattering for your hairtype.  It will be a lot less effort than having to change the texture and try to get it to stay.

Yeah it just flips up on the ends. So you mean it'll keep curling on the ends like that until it gets past a certain point of length, then it'll straighten out from the weight?

Have you tried using straighning iron to flatten the back ends of your hair, this should do the trick, always apply a heat protetor first. You actually look like sawyer.

Well my hair is still not long enough to have the style pictured, and i've tried to use a straightening iron on the back but you can't get a good grip on the hair because while it's long enough to flip up and curl at the ends, it's not long enough to properly use a flat iron on. Is chemical straightening recommended? I don't know if it would be good for me since I have straight/wavy hair. It was pin straight when I was little but as I got older (i'm 17 now) it started to get wavier. I also darken my hair a lot (my natural hair color is platinum blonde, I hate it lol), and what i'm planning to do is grow my hair to that length then get lowlights. Can you use chemical straightener and har dye at the same time, is it safe?

And Karen, the first pic isn't me, it's a model haha. I'll upload some pics of myself and my current hair if it would help.

Thanks for the replies.

Hi,

You could have your hair chemicaly straingned, but I dont think you would need to go to those lenghts. I would wait until your hair is long enough to use straighning irons at the back. I understand the situation you have with trying to grip the back of the hair. when its long enough you wont have that problem.

Sorry, but I thought that was you in the pic. If you can post one I would be able to advise you better on how wavy your hair is etc.

Ok here's some pics -- sorry they're kinda big. Keep in mind I have quite a bit of gel and stuff in my hair, which I kinda have to do otherwise it all puffs up and dries out. I'm hesitant to take a pic without any product in because I look terrifying...

Anyway you can see in the back one side is a bit longer than the other, which really frustrates me. I even trimmed the longer side down not too long ago but it grows amazingly fast I guess. And the other thing that really annoys me is that in order to get my hair like this, I need to use two types of gel (got2b glued and got2b freeze spray) and strap my hair down into separated bangs in front, wait until it dries and gets hard (about an hour), then straighten it with a flat iron, then blow dry the front up while spraying more gel in to get it to stay. All in all about 2 hours. How much does that suck? I really wish I could just shower, comb, and go, which is part of the reason I want the long hairstyle.

2 hours, OMG, I think by looking at your pic is your hair is very thick, and thats why its taking so long to style, if this is a problem next time your at the salon for a cut ask them to thin it down for you, this wont take away from the length, just the weight in your hair.

I think your hair is pretty flat, I would'nt advice on chemical straightning.

Can I sujest a product that may help cut down your styling time. I am sure its avaliable in the US. Its called Schwarzkopf Thrill fiber gum, you can buy it at sally's and its not expensive. All you will need to do is blow dry your hair apply some fiber gum to the palm of your hands, rub them together and the heat from your hands will melt the gum just applt to all over your hair and style, simple and its good stuff.

Yeah it's pretty ridiculous.... if I want to do it faster I can just put the gel in, blow dry it until it hardens then straighten and wear it flat, but that still takes like half an hour.

So about the long hairstyle, first of all do you think it would look good on me if I darkened my hair a bit like I said? And also, with my hair type do you think i'd be able to get it to look like the pictures? Would I need to get it thinned out or anything?

yes you can get the style like sawyer's, you may need to ease up on the gel though Smile, as sawyer's hair is quite flowie, if you know what I mean. As for thinning the hair down, yeah you might need to a little. Just hang on in there your hair wont take too long to get to sawyer's length, and yes you will suit it, you have a good fase shape for his style.

Good luck, and remember rome was'nt built in a day, so be patient, lol.

Oh forgot to say, I like your hair colour, to get Sawyer's colour all you need to add is an ash tone to your hair, dont darken it too much as you skin tone is slightly pale, too dark a colour may make you look a little washed out.

Just a thoughtApprove Karen

Ok that's a good tip... so you mean ash instead of lowlights? Because believe it or not, right now my hair is darkened quite a bit from my natural hair color, which is platinum blonde, almost white. And what color exactly is ash? I always imagine the grey stuff that comes out of volcanoes lol.

And I forgot to ask, would I need to get my hair cut differently when I grow it long, like angled at all? Because right now I have a bowl cut kind of thing going on.

So after I grow it long, dye it, thin it out and everything, do you think i'll be able to just shower, comb and go and have it look like the guy in the first pic? I'm just worried because if I don't put any sort of product in my hair, it's really bad -- it gets really dry and light (in colour) and poofy, and it really takes the bowl cut shape. Also it curls up a bit so it looks massively shorter.

EDIT: forgot to say this: I can't seem to grow sideburns, which I never really cared about because they'd look terrible on me, but looking at the pics again, both the model and sawyer have sideburns. Would that style look ok without sideburns?

ASH is a cool colour, so it will cool down the tone allready in your  hair and will darken it slightly without it looking too dark.

As for cutting your hair diffrent, when your hair is long enough for that style in your first pic, take a few pictures with you to the salon, show the stylist what you want done with your hair and they should cut it in the style.

I think after you wash your hair you will still need to blow dry you hair as flat as possible , then use the straightning irons on your hair to straighten it, to try and keep it straight try applying some serum.

As for the sideburns, I think you will still suit the style and if your hair is long enough you wont see sideburns anyway.

And finally as I am a hairstylist, it is possible for you to have the style you want, but will have to maintain this style, buy getting it thinned down and restyled every few month's.

I hope this has answered some of your questions, KarenSmile
