Subject: How to eliminate orange/brassy tones?

My hair is naturally jet black. I prefer it to be a little bit lighter. I've tried many dyes including dark browns, medium ash brown, and light brown. After a week, my hair turns a coppery orange color with brassy highlights.

How can I get a medium to light brown color without that horrible brassy / orange cast?

Thanks!

Make sure that the colors you use are ashes, and/or use intensifer or toners with purple/blue casts. You can alway use shimmer lights shampoo (its basically a shampoo with purple dye in it) to ensure that the color comes out less yellow and orange, but it won't help much with the fading.

To keep your color longer try putting a clear color on top of the color you just did (it works kind of like a nail polish, makes the hair shiner and seals in the color). Rinse with cold water to keep the color longer. And/Or I don't know if your using semi/permanet dye but you might just need to keep the hair color on longer with some heat just be careful, I don't know how processed your hair is.

Basically, you can walk into any Sally's Beauty Supply and ask for products that lessen the brassy tones, there are tons and tons.  Shampoos, rinses, dyes, toners, intensifers, conditioner.... It really depends on if you want the original color to be less brassy, or if you want the fade to be less brassy

Thank you for your help oats42. I have never heard of the clear color before. I am going to give that a try, and the shimmer lights shampoo, or whatever I can find at Sally's.

The Shimmer Lights conditioner and shampoo are great just dont leave it in too long and dont use it everyday or it WILL stain your hair that purplish/ blue color. I use the Shimmer lights once a week and leave the conditioner on for only 2 minutes or so. That stuff works great if you use it like that.

Is this "Shimmer Lights Conditioner" basically like a toner? Where can you buy it. Also I have never heard of Sally's is it in the UK?

Shimmer Lights conditioner has a toner base in it to cancel out any unwanted yellow tones in the hair, and yes there are Sally beauty stores all over the UK.

Google Sally's beauty store's to find the nearest to you.

I used to dye my hair blonde and I would get those orange tones also. I use shampoo for gray/silver hair. I think the brand was panteen. It's a purple shampoo so it has a little bit of toner in it that makes your hair look a lot less brassy. Also, I learned that it will kinda wash out and fade with time.
Hope I could help!
