Hi,

As a man trying to cover gray, it seemed to me that a semi-permanent would be the most natural looking and the least damaging as my hair is only about an inch and a half long and I have to color often.

Anyway, I've tried two brands now and both just washed out of my hair with NO COLOR CHANGE AT ALL.  Gray is same exact color it was - gray.

Weird.  What am I doing wrong?

Can someone recommend a semi-permanent that blends away gray (even if it just lasts for 5 or six shampoos)?  I want to stay away from that solid color "helmet head" look I get from permanent color.

Well, what did you use and what did you do exactly...?  You know that the men's colors are not any different than the women's, right?  If you want a nice semi product, then go to a Sally Beauty Supply, and find something there.  OTC stuff really tends to be unpredictable, because you cannot tell how old it is.  My guess is that the stuff was just old?  Who knows, again what did you use and what did you do exactly?

you can not color your hair gray...gray hair is the absence of pigment...anything that is semi will fade...demi is the new permanent...it will also fade...permanent will last until it grows out...because it actually enters the hair shaft and changes the melanin
