HI. I have very thick , long hair. I am considering getting a curly perm(spiral, most likely). I was wondering if either from personal experience or any other if you think It will work. I am dreading whether it may come out in a totally huge untamed afro - looking `do. Would you sugguest getting a perm( professionally) And I will note this is my first professionally done perm so I guess another question is can the beautician use special techniques to make it not go totally out of whack, or is there special produckts to tame it and make sure it doesn`t mess up. I would love curly hair but all I am afraid of is the dreaded fro!
Another question is, I was also thinking about getting highlights, how long of time after a perm should i get the highlights.

Nothing is scarier than having a perm that comes out bad. OK I had a spiral perm. Everything came out fine. Talk to your stylist about rod size. I suggest the biggest ones or at least big ones. Next talk about the time the solution and netralizer will be on your hair. And you help to keep tract of the time. It`s my understanding that that`s when most perms are screwed up and your hair damaged.
Has your hair every been permed before? Also use a conditioner everyday and use the good stuff designed for permed hair. You can also use a leave in conditioner. Check at the salon, you will pay a little more but how important is your to you? Don`t wash your hair for 2 days. ( I think) So schedule your appontment around that. Ask your stylist about washing and perm maintenance.
I can`t tell you about highlights and color. Get Professional advice on that.
If you have colored or highlighted your hair in the past few months TELL the stylist.. This may prevent damage to your hair.
I`ve only had one spiral so by no means am i an expert. I`m 16, still in school. These are only suggestions. Later
