If you read my post below you will know that I am contemplating trying a permanent hair color. I am trying to decide between going to a salon versus the cheaper route of doing it myself at home. I know it is less expensive to do it at home, but do you usually get better (read, more predictable) results at the salon? Is it worth the extra $$$? Are the salon products really better? (you know -- Redken versus Loreal. etc)
I did have one bad salon experience, which has me running a little scared. On the other hand, I guess the same thing could happen at home, or maybe worse?

If you are experienced and know exactly what you`re doing, you should have no problems at all. Although the exact chemical composition is altered a bit, the same chemicals are used in home and salon chemical treatments.
However, if you`re a novice, the results come totally at chance. You may be lucky and get exactly the results you want! Or, you may be unlucky and end up with a fried mess or a head of orange or green hair.
Personally, I love to save money wherever I can. However, my hair is not an experiment. I want results upon which I can count. Which is why I go to a salon.
A suggestion -- for the first time, I`d go to a salon. Discuss with your stylist your goals. Be honest and tell him that although you`d love to frequent his salon, your budget unfortunately cannot support your desires. If your stylist is very helpful and tries to guide you to home products the best he can, tip him well!
A hint, though, the lighter your hair color, the more difficult it is to color at home. The very first time that I tried to color my hair at home, I called the 800 number on the box for advice, and to my amazement, I was advised to visit a salon since my hair is a naturally light/medium blonde. I received highlights at the salon which I`ve maintained ever since, and I`ve never been disappointed.

I strongly recommend listening to Jennifer on this.
If you know your chemicals, colors, and have been either doing this yourself or done it with friends or family you will have no problem. But if that were the case I assume you wouldn`t be asking. At least get it done professionally a few times before even attempting it if you have reservations (not the vacation kind)...wags

It all really depends on how well educated and experience your hairstylist is.
Look for a hairstylist that can give you a proper consultation that will put you at ease..........

If you only want to cover grays & brighten your color then surely, you can risk it at home since you would only be using the same color you already have. But, if you want to significantly change you color, or highlight AND you`ve never done it before than yes, you should go to the salon. But, by all means get recomendations from friends or merely ask strangers that have beautifully colored hair where they went! If you compliment them, they usually will give you the details!!
