Hi, I'm 17 and I have thick black hair. I have always wanted to grow my hair out long and have tried many times. But everytime I try it gets too crazy and I have to end up cutting it because I don't see it growing the way I want. I'm not sure if I should go to a salon instead of my regular barber shop for this type of haircut. Right now my hair is about 3 inches long on top and a little shorter on the sides. I can easily push it back with gel but I want to get it to the point where it just goes back and stays when I push my hand over it. These pictures are basically the look I'm going for and I'll upload one image as well. Any help I can get is appreciated.

Sounds like you've about got it. If you have thick black hair, 3 inches on top and shorter on the back and sides, your hair is already similar to his, and gel is pretty much the way to go. I have hair to my waist but it doesn't stay back when I push it over my head with my hand, the length doesn't matter, I'd need some gel.
