I am Mediterranean with typical dark brown, almost black hair with heavy red undertones and some greying. I am trying to find a hair color that will lift my hair to a medium or light reddish brown, but without having to lighten it with bleach first, which I have had to do because regular light brown hair color never lifts my hair enough and my hair basically just ends up looking like a drab brown. I don't have a huge issue with bleaching my hair first before depositing color, but what does bother me is treating my roots, as I find it almost impossible to bleach just my roots out without it getting all over my already treated hair. So this is why I would like to find a haircolor that will make my dark hair a nice reddish brown, without bleach, and that I can just apply to my roots without worrying if it gets on my already treated hair. Does such a product exist? Is there really a haircolor out their that will truly take dark brown hair to a lighter color in one easy step? Thanks for your help!
PS: Just in case there is no haircolor that can do this, can someone please tell me how you can thicken bleach so that it doesn't run all over the place? I have heard you can put flour or something similar in it so that is becomes very thick but won't negatively affect it's bleaching power, but want to make sure this is correct. Thanks a bunch!

Hey Pros! I'm calling them because I think it might work if you got your color at a beauty supply shop (like Sally) and you got a 40 volume developer with a reddish brown color (dye)...but I am not a pro and I don't know if these darker colors are made to use with 40 volume developer. Do any pros out there know? Would it just come out too orange? Usually the boxed colors at the drug store would be for people who don't want a lot of lift and I don't think they come with a very high volume of developer, so certainly wouldn't lift such dark hair very much. If no one answers, you could always try a test strand and see if it works on a small piece of hidden hair. See how your roots and previously dyed hair respond (you do want to try to keep it off of previously bleached hair I'm sure, so the first application would certainly be challenging). You can buy creme developer, don't buy the liquid because it certainly would run more. Thanks Susan! Let's hope the Pro's can figure this one out too..lol. I've seen on websites that there are haircolors made specifically to lift brown hair about 3-4 shades without brassiness, like this:

But I have my doubts on how well these work, and hoping someone here has tried them and can give input. It is such a pain in the butt to be able to get a nice color, but then you just KNOW your gonna have a horrible time getting the roots done..ugh! And my hair grows so fast that I could never afford to do this at a shop all the time, so I have to be able to do it myself or it's a no-go. Let's hope some Pro's see this and help me out, and thanks again Susan!
