I don't know too much about hair, but i've been wanting to go
completely dark from the light brown color hair I have now to black. So my mom went to a salon and asked our stylist about dying hair permanently black. She said it wont be a good idea because its really hard to lift a highlight even from dark brown hair and to get rid of it I would probably have to grow it all out. So because my mother wouldn't let me do that after the reasonable explanation, I thought getting a red highlight-type thing would be cool. I didn't actually want to get red highlights, but i've seen some people with redish-pink extensions that were the same length of their hair. It made it look like it was streaked and came out from the inside of their hair. Is it a good idea to get extensions instead of highlights? How long do they stay in for? Do I take them out myself, or do I have someone else do it? Are they usually really costly? Thanks :) |

I would do clip-in pieces with red. Ebay has some. Put in "clip-in hair red" in the search and a few will pop up. With the clips, you can place them as high or low in your hair and wherever you want the color to come through. They snap in and snap off real easy and you can wear them all day up until bedtime.

This is the hair color board, post your question there too. You may be able to dye your hair black after all maybe with a semi or demi permanent hair color. They rinse out. ------------- ALL EYES ON ME |

The clips don't show at all. They're underneath the extension hair and they snap onto your own hair. The terms 'semi' and 'demi' permanent are misleading. All it really means is they have no or low ammonia and low peroxide. I've gone from honey blonde to jet black and it rinsed out after several shampoos. The honey blonde may have been a little darker but the black was gone. Maybe it depends on the brand. ------------- ALL EYES ON ME |

Eek! I have a naturally med dark brown hair that is porous. I dyed it a dark #2 which ended up closer to black then dark brown. It was a b*tch to get rid of. I had to color fix it a few times and then recolor with a lighter color then what I wanted to end up with. I think you should ask about coloring over at the hair color section, I think there is a lot of rgeat info over there.
Instead of red, you could always do black low-lights with clip ins, if you weren't hot on red....
If you haven't done much chemically to your hair, you MAY be able to get away with using a 28 wash kind of color, something like Castings think it's called. ------------- |

Like metalgirl said, when hair is porous, it grabs on and doesn't want to let go. I've had the same experience as asinnamon going darker.
The thing that stands out for me here is that her mom said no. I know when I was growing up, when mom said no it meant no and I had to find another way to either present the idea or forget it altogether. No i've never dyed my hair or anything. But my mother wants it permanent or not done at all because of the chemicals. Well does anybody know where they sell the clips in a US store such as Salleys? |

I don't understand, my meds haven't kicked in yet. Why would she want it permanently black but then lift the color later? Does she think you'll change your mind or something? Why not a semi or demi color that'll rinse out.

All those Asian type henna coloring will stick on the hair permanently. Some even have a metalic compound that will NEVER lighten up. How old are you? My daughter in 17 and I won't let her dye her hair with a permanent color either but she's allowed to use rinses if she chooses too.
Do you think she would mind you dyeing it back to your original color if you change your mind about the color? What did the girls on the hair color forum suggest? ------------- ALL EYES ON ME |

MsHoney, I have a 17year old daughter too...fun eh?  Her best friend is in cos school (just graduated) and they have both been about every color under the sun in the past 2 years. Its been a real treat...

Ok sorry to interupt lol. But I talked my mom into letting me dye my hair black with the kind of Dye that lasts 4 weeks or whatever and if I like it I can perm dye it but I still want the red extensions. Any suggested brands of 28 day hair coloring and what is it called? |

you could try natural instincts by loreal i think not sure if it'd be a great idea though i've dyed my hair with it and the color didn't take at all |
