What is a "hot perm" - apparently what was done before modern perming? Old pictures show ladies with their hair hooked up to metal cylinders, attatched to tubes. Is this hot perming? It looks scary. What was inside the tubes? Perm solution? Hot water? I`m very curious.

Those clamps were to deliver heat to the perm rods to activate the perm solution. The modern Uniperm used a similar principle.
