I was just wondering if anyone knew if you have to tone bonde highlights? I get my hair highlighted and then toned and after a few days it seems yellow, sometimes brassy. I saw a woman yesterday and I really liked the tone of her hair and she said that her hairdresser did not tone her hair and when she had it toned in the past she did not like it. So is that what I am doing wrong? Does anyone have any comments or suggestions?

No you dont have to tone blonde hair. Some people have hair light enough that it lifts to the shade they need.I have a friend who's hair lifts to white blonde with permanent color. But her starting color is pretty light to begin with.

If you arent already I would reccomend a purple shampoo and conditioner.Or you can get a little tube of purple additive that you can add to your shampoo/condish called ardell red/gold corrector  if you want to keep the tone you get at the hairdressers.I like sally's beauty supply they carry the tube I was talking about and its super cheap.Aveda makes a great conditioner for blondes called blue malva(which is actually purple) which gets rid of unwanted brassy tones.

Thanks! I have one more question...why do hairdressers tone the hair after bleaching? is it to rid the brassy tones? My hair ifts well so I don't think I need to tone it after bleaching. Everytime I get my hair done they automatically tone to "blend" everything.

toning your hair is optional, it just depends on what you are happy with. i would be careful though, many stylist claim to be the experts, years of experience, etc.

it depends! i've had a stylist insist i needed a toner on my blonde hair, pale blonde, yellow and white, she put a toner on it and turned it ashy grey, i had grey hair, it also kind of had a blue tint to it, another toner another stylist put on my hair, she turned my hair lavender purple! yikes, i've had some bad experiences with toners, i now either get my roots done or get a highlift, which is usually a platinum blonde, natural blonde, or beige blonde.

the difference isnt real big, but highlift/toner does make that little bit of difference, this little difference makes it a whole lot nicer!

It depends. Sometimes hair needs to be toned while others don't need to be toned. It seemed that those who have very pale highlights may don't need toning while the others opting for medium or light blond hair might need toning to minimize brassiness.
