Ok, so....I've done some browsing thru the forums, and I'm officially WAY more confused then when I started ...That being said...I'm lookin for some insight.
I have VERY thin/fine hair, and it has never been able to grow pretty much past my shoulders. I have never had real hair extensions, but a couple months ago I bought clip-on human hair, and absolutely loved them. (I FINALLY had hair!!!!) However, they really hurt the sides of my head, and have pulled out so much hair, that I'm ready to bit the $$ bullet move on to the real thing.
I'm wondering what is the best method for my type of hair, and what hair I should buy. Also, do you normally buy the hair seperate from the person who installs it? I want something reasonable in price (maybe $1G), but most importantly I dont want to be bald after 6 months, when i get them removed.
Also...if anyone knows someone to refer me to in the Fort Lauderdale/ Miami area....that would be great too!!!

Oh you don't want to be bald when you take them out? Well hmmm. Not too sure what to tell you. (just kidding)
I have fine hair and I do the sew in method. I did clip ins for a year and thought it was the safest way but they are SO annoying!! Anyway, the sew in is soooo comfortable and I'm watching my own hair grow now that I'm not abusing it.
Is your hair curly or straight? I bought my own hair and I bring it to the braider. I pay $25 per track and I get two tracks.
This is my method of choice because I'm not too comfortable with the thought of glue but many people here love the tapes or the liquid gold (which is glue).
Some people here do their own individuals. I tried that a few times but the weft method give a lot more volume and coverage.
Do you have a picture of your hair? It will give us a better idea of what you're starting with.

Thanx Malibu. So, I guess I would have to say I have wavy hair..?..Which I usually blow dry straight. Its a pretty unusual length bc the clip ons made some hairs break/ fall out, so the top hair goes to like right under my ears, and the bottom is below my neck. (I know....sounds like a mullet, but I swear its not!! hahah ).
I feel like I would be better off w/ weft also, because volume is definately what I need...and thats why I felt the clip ons just may always look better bc its a whole lotta hair. What type of hair do you get.... and from where...and how much is it?? And can you re-use the hair when you sew? I've been reading about Bohyme and So-Cap...these are both types of hair I believe. Ok, I know alot of questions...thanx!! I need a hairapist!! hahah.

I have been wearing extensions for 16 years, and clip ins for about 6 years now. Honestly, my hair is so thin that any permanent hair extension method pulls out a lot of hair. Occasionally I still wear permanent extensions, but I'm always sorry when it comes to time to remove them.
I have not noticed any hair loss with the clip ins. I wrote a tutorial here, somewhere in the archieves, about my method of putting in clip ins. Basically, I tease and hair spray the hair along the part line where you are placing the clip ins. That makes a sticky 'mat' and something for the clip ins to hook into. They stay in very well that way.
Occasionally I get pain from clip. If so, I just re-tease and hair spray to build up the mat in that spot and usually it takes care of the problem.
For my clients with hair like me, where I don't think their hair can support other extensions, I make them custom clip ins and train them how to apply them.

Hi reve. A grand is reasonable? Boy are you going to have fun with extensions . You'll be able to try every method out here if you're willing to do it yourself. You can get your mom or friends to help.
Why do you think the clips-ins pulled out your hair? Did they feel heavy? Where along the weft/track did you lose hair? You want to make sure that it was the clips and not some underlying health issue.
If your hair is really thin and can't take much weight then skin wefts may be a better option for you. You may want to read all of this, she was having the same problem as you are with thin fine hair. http://talk.hairboutique.com//forum_posts.asp?TID=52224&KW=SKIN+WEFTS&PN=3 - http://talk.hairboutique.com//forum_posts.asp?TID=52224&KW=SKIN+WEFTS&PN=3

Thanks guys! Well, to be honest, the clip-ons only hurt on the sides of my head (like on my temples), not the back, and i think its because it has just pulled out so much hair there, that they don't have much to cling on to....and yes, they do feel very heavy. (ie. Everytime I wear them, the first thing i do when I walk in my place is take my hair out =). I have tried teasing it, but I will definately be looking over your tutorial metalgirl, bc obviously I'm not doing it right =(.
Ok..so a grand..I know, not alot, I just can't believe how much $$ people spend on these hair extensions, especially if it will only last a couple months!!! or even weeks!!! Ms. Honey, I dont know how I'd feel about DIY'ing....hahah, better yet my mom doing it for me..I think I'd rather go to the homeless man that lives on the corner for that matter, haha.
So, thanks so much for refering me to that posting, it definately helped me to see my options. I think the skin wefts are a GREAT idea. Has anyone on here had skin wefts?? Can you pull the hair back in a pony? How long do they last? What is the best type of hair? Where do you buy? How much are they usually? Wow, I'm just full o' questions....thanx so much for your help and advice!!!

With a grand, you could do alot, a WHOLE lot. I think the weft/tracks are the easiest to install and a great first install for a new DIY'er. I wouldn't involve the homeless guy though .
Can you post pics of your hair how it is now and a few pics of how you want it to look? That would give us a better idea what may work best for you.
Since the damage appears to be coming from the weight of the clips I think you should be fine with the skin wefts. I've never worn them but I think they'll be the next thing I'll try on my daughter. Ah, guinea pigs... Anywho, here are the most reasonably priced skin wefts I've found: http://extensionwarehouse.com/quarterinch.htm - http://extensionwarehouse.com/quarterinch.htm comes in 30 colors.
http://mymaneattractions.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=3_7 - http://mymaneattractions.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=3_7 you may need to have them dyed or dye it yourself if you don't want dark colored hair.

Oh, haha...i thought you meant that i couldnt do sh*t w/ a grand..oops! So...I can't post pics of my hair just yet bc the lens on my digi is broken, but once i can, i will. I went to the site which you sent me...but I'm a little confused. How many of those wefts will I need? It says they sell by 1/4", which is $100. It doesn't seem like a lot of hair, hmmmm...??? I think bc my hair is thin I probobly will need more than the average person.
Also, do you think if you glue the wefts, does it damage your hair? I am definately NOT thinking about doing it myself (atleast not the 1st time!). I can't really see how they are applying the wefts in the pic though.

the wefts seem to have an adhesive attached to it. If not, or if you want to make it more secure, you would use an adhesive strip to bond it to your hair. The 1/4 is the length of the part where the hair and adhesive is attached the skin part of the skin weft. It comes in a bundle of 4- 15" pieces of skin wefts. If installed and removed properly you should have no problem with the adhesive strip.
It would be very easy to install yourself. You part your hair, add the double-sided tape to the weft and press the weft onto your hair.

How long would you think the adhesive sticks for do you think? I mean, like days/weeks/months? Also, do you wear them like normal hair, ie. shower with them, can wear them in a pool, without people noticing? (Sorry...i just live in South Florida, where it is SOO hot/humid) Also..if they are bundles of 4 1/4", how many would you say i need for a full head? Sorry...I know i'm probobly making this alot more complicated than it is, I'm just wanna make sure I do it right!! Thanks so much!!!

Ooooh...didn't see the pics you posted till just now, thanx!! I cant even see the tape in that first pic, looks great! Is the adhesive sticking to the hair or scalp??

the bundles come in 15"strips and there are four 15" strips to a bundle. Depending on how full you want your hair you will probably only need one or two bundles.

The adhesive is pressed onto the hair not the scalp.

if you are interested in DIY, there are some very easy methods using tape and wefts. It really is very simple and easy enough for a DIYer. I use supertape with wefted hair. I easily get 6 weeks wear before they need redone. Its the easiest out of any method I have used.

Hi Sherrie. Is it ok to get conditioner or oil on the tapes? Will that make them loosen up?

thanks for mentioning that Mshoney. You need to keep shampoo, conditioner or oils off the tapes as much as possible. Yes it can loosen them. Although I am sure I do get some on the tapes without any problems.

Thanks so much guys! Ok, with the tapes, does it pull on your hair?? I'm also concerned about how secure tape can be on the hair also. Like...are there instances if someone does a little yank on the hair, it can come out?? (eeeeek!!)
Also, when you say not to shampoo or condition...does that mean you cant shampoo the scalp where they are...does it get oily??
One more question...sorry!! When you remove the extensions every six weeks #1. How do you remove it, DIY?? #2. Can you reuse the same hair, and attach a different adhesive? Sherrie, where do you get your wefted hair from, and how long does it last?

Reve22. The tapes are very comfortable. They are basically a glue in a tape form. And they are very secure. My last install that I just replaced a few days ago was in for 10 weeks and still was very secure. Although most people dont get quite that long out of a tape install. No yanking wont pull them out. Even at 10 weeks there was nothing loose or insecure. I use supertape with a little added liquid gold adhesive. This combo gives me an amazing hold. There are several types of tapes, and some work better for each person.
I dont worry too much about the shampoo getting on the tapes. I try to keep the conditioner off the tapes. I put my condtioner on the top of my head and on the length of my hair and work it through. I just try to avoid the tape area with the condtioner, although some does get on them, but its never bothered much for me.
There are several different removal solutions, and what works best varies with the individual. Myself, I prefer straight professional acetone. It works the best and quickest for me, although some people dont like using acetone and there are plenty of alternatives to acetone.
Yep, you can reuse the hair. Remove the old tape and replace with new tape and your good to go.
I use Bohyme hair. The hair has always consistantly performed well for me. But there are several good brands of hair to choose from depending on what you are looking for.

Thanks Sherrie! A couple more "amateur" questions if you all dont mind. When you refer to wefted hair, is there a difference b/t that and skin wefts? I believe so, but I'm not quite sure what the difference is. Also, as I was reading there is the machine wefted and hand-tied wefted, what would you recommend..or what is your preference. When you buy the hair, does it come with the tape or you buy that seperate based on preference.
Ok, also...where do you apply the wefts on the head. I keep looking at pictures people have posted, and I just cant figure it out ..haha, not really sure why. I would imagine around your head, but possibly on the top of your head. Sorry...i know thats probobly a really stupid question. =). Thank u so much!!!!!

This is the basic pattern I use for placing my wefts on my head
I use long pieces for each row, but some people find it easier to work with smaller pieces and you can do that. So instead of say an 11 inch row at the top, you can do a 5 inch piece at the back and 3 inch piece on each side, (or whatever your measurements are).
The track on handtied wefts are smaller than a machine weft. I prefer handtied because I double and triple the wefts for added volume and thickness, and the handtied wefts are smaller and flatter. The machine wefts are a bit more durable and will likely hold up longer in the long haul. (Although Ive never hand any hantied wefts come apart) The machine wefts are a bit bulkier. But I have even been known to double or triple the machine wefts with no problems. (But definitely bulkier)
