I have VERY thin/fine hair, and it has never been able to grow pretty much past my shoulders. I have never had real hair extensions, but a couple months ago I bought clip-on human hair, and absolutely loved them. (I FINALLY had hair!!!!) However, they really hurt the sides of my head, and have pulled out so much hair, that I'm ready to bit the $$ bullet move on to the real thing.

 

I'm wondering what is the best method for my type of hair, and what hair I should buy. Also, do you normally buy the hair seperate from the person who installs it? I want something reasonable in price (maybe $1G), but most importantly I dont want to be bald after 6 months, when i get them removed.

 

Also...if anyone knows someone to refer me to in the Fort Lauderdale/ Miami area....that would be great too!!!

I feel like I would be better off w/ weft also, because volume is definately what I need...and thats why I felt  the clip ons just may always look better bc its a whole lotta hair. What type of hair do you get.... and from where...and how much is it?? And can you re-use the hair when you sew? I've been reading about Bohyme and So-Cap...these are both types of hair I believe. Ok, I know alot of questions...thanx!! I need a hairapist!! hahah.

 

I have not noticed any hair loss  with the clip ins.  I wrote a tutorial here, somewhere in the archieves, about my method of putting in clip ins.  Basically, I tease and hair spray the hair along the part line where you are placing the clip ins.  That makes a sticky 'mat' and something for the clip ins to hook into.   They stay in very well that way.

 

Occasionally I get pain from  clip.  If so, I just re-tease and hair spray to build up the mat in that spot and usually it takes care of the problem.

 

For my clients with hair like me, where I don't think their hair can support other extensions, I make them custom clip ins and train them how to apply them.

 

  If your hair is really thin and can't take much weight then skin wefts may be a better option for you. Ok..so a grand..I know, not alot, I just can't believe how much $$ people spend on these hair extensions, especially if it will only last a couple months!!! or even weeks!!! Ms. Honey, I dont know how I'd feel about DIY'ing....hahah, better yet my mom doing it for me..I think I'd rather go to the homeless man that lives on the corner for that matter, haha.  

 

So, thanks so much for refering me to that posting, it definately helped me to see my options. I think the skin wefts are a GREAT idea. Has anyone on here had skin wefts?? Can you pull the hair back in a pony? How long do they last? What is the best type of hair? Where do you buy? How much are they usually? Wow, I'm just full o' questions....thanx so much for your help and advice!!!

 

 With a grand, you could do alot, a WHOLE lot. I think the weft/tracks are the easiest to install and a great first install for a new DIY'er. I wouldn't involve the homeless guy though.

 Since the damage appears to be coming from the weight of the clips I think you should be fine with the skin wefts. I've never worn them but I think they'll be the next thing I'll try on my daughter. Ah, guinea pigs... Also, do you think if you glue the wefts, does it damage your hair? I am definately NOT thinking about doing it myself (atleast not the 1st time!). I can't really see how they are applying the wefts in the pic though.

  It would be very easy to install yourself. You part your hair, add the double-sided tape to the weft and press the weft onto your hair.

Also, when you say not to shampoo or condition...does that mean you cant shampoo the scalp where they are...does it get oily??

 

One more question...sorry!! When you remove the extensions every six weeks #1. How do you remove it, DIY?? #2. Can you reuse the same hair, and attach a different adhesive? Sherrie, where do you get your wefted hair from, and how long does it last?

 

I dont worry too much about the shampoo getting on the tapes. I try to keep the conditioner off the tapes. I put my condtioner on the top of my head and on the length of my hair and work it through. I just try to avoid the tape area with the condtioner, although some does get on them, but its never bothered much for me.

 

There are several different removal solutions, and what works best varies with the individual. Myself, I prefer straight professional acetone. It works the best and quickest for me, although some people dont like using acetone and there are plenty of alternatives to acetone.

 

Yep, you can reuse the hair. Remove the old tape and replace with new tape and your good to go.

 

I use Bohyme hair. The hair has always consistantly performed well for me. But there are several good brands of hair to choose from depending on what you are looking for.

Ok, also...where do you apply the wefts on the head. I keep looking at pictures people have posted, and I just cant figure it out ..haha, not really sure why. I would imagine around your head, but possibly on the top of your head. Sorry...i know thats probobly a really stupid question. =). Thank u so much!!!!!

I use long pieces for each row, but some people find it easier to work with smaller pieces and you can do that. So instead of say an 11 inch row at the top, you can do a 5 inch piece at the back and 3 inch piece on each side, (or whatever your measurements are).

 

The track on handtied wefts are smaller than a machine weft. I prefer handtied because I double and triple the wefts for added volume and thickness, and the handtied wefts are smaller and flatter. The machine wefts are a bit more durable and will likely hold up longer in the long haul. (Although Ive never hand any hantied wefts come apart) The machine wefts are a bit bulkier. But I have even been known to double or triple the machine wefts with no problems. (But definitely bulkier)
