right this may be a silly question how do you wash your scalp without getting the lengths wet-this idea sounds great to me as i have greasy roots and dry ends
what shampoos do you all use? and are there shampoos out there that dont contain the amonium sulphates(and the rest of that kind of thing)
cheers

I have tried this several times, getting better results each time. Here are my suggestions:

Gather your hair in a bun and secure a small plastic bag over it. Use one hand to hold it in place, the other hand to apply (and moments later to lather) the shampoo. For the scalp area under the bun, lift the bun an inch or two away from your head, then repeat the shampoo application and lathering in that area.

It's a technique which, like many haircare and styling issues, requires practice to perfect. Let us know how it works for you, gizmocrystal.

Wow, great question and great answer!
I too have always struggled with greasy roots and dry ends. I'm definitely going to try your technique, Dave!

Thanks Isla! I hope it works for you.

Another thing I do (most of the time, anymore) is to let all my hair get wet, and apply and lather only at and near the scalp... but, just before I rinse, I lift the length of my hair up and over my head. Then rinse. This forces the shampoo and its bubbles to rinse out at about ear-to-chin level, so the drier ends aren't exposed to much, if any, of the shampoo. Sometimes I allow just a bit of the suds to rinse through the lengths for a mild cleansing effect.

This could work for y'all, as well.

I do that apply-and-lather-only-at-the-scalp thingy too sometimes, but the lifting bit is new for me. What works better: the plastic bag or the lifting-technique?

And can I just compliment you, Dave on your good work here in Long Hair Support? I mean, this was a good board before, but now it's a great board! Keep up the good work!

Thanks Isla, I have enjoyed the conversations here, especially since I became Admin. The more people participate, the more fun and interesting the discussions.

To answer your question on scalp-washing, for me the "all-wet and lifting to rinse" is the method I deploy every time I wash, which these days is only once per week! It only starts to get greasy on about the 6th day... have trained that scalp well. But if it gets oily "too" soon during the week I will occasionally do the scalp wash wherein most of the hair is kept dry.
