Hi- I am new to to forum (posting that is) although I have been an avid reader for a while. I wanted to ask the experts which method is easier to remove and causes the least amount of damage, hair locs (small ones) or shrink links? I currently have the GL type of keratin bonds and am fine with them but was interested in trying a safer method. I also want one that looks pretty natural. I have medium thickness but very fine hair.

thanks

Hello,

I have used both methods in my salon for several years.  I love shrink links and the silicone lined micro rings.

I don't like the actual brand of 'Hairlocs', since they tell you some crazy stuff like the 'maintenace' of just sliding the rings up instead of completely removing and re-installing after 12 weeks.  The rings need to come out completely to get rid of the shed hair or you will have problems.

So, either the shrink links or the silicone lined micro rings are safe, provided they are installed and removed properly.    I would experiment with them both to see what you like and what works the best for you.

I prefer the trumpet tubes, I'm not sure if they are similar to hairlocs or not.  They are thinner and flatten nicely and are comfortable for me.  I have tried shrinkies and had trouble with the upper rows showing because my natural hair would slide to either side of the shrink.  Also, for me the silicone lined micro rings were very painfull.  I had to take them out after a day.  They were my first install, but I have tried them again since then(now that  know what I'm doing) and they stll hurt.

As far as removal,  I think both shrinks and tubes are easy to remove.  Both you have to go slow and take your time with.  Shrinks require a chemical like orange oil remover or acetone to take out.  Rings or tubes just require pliers.

If you are DIYing you could try some of each and see what you like better.  If you are getting a pro install, maybe you could talk to your extensionist and see if you could get a few of each type installed to try out....

Thanks so much for the feedback. How do you compare these methods with the keratin bond method (GL or SOcap)? I know those are pretty invisible but I have heard they can be damaging when removed. How are shrink links different? Are they rubber or silicone tubes? I am just worried about hair damage and don't want to end up with less hair on my head than I have now.
I have tried the GL/Socap before and am looking for a safer method and also want to try something new. I wasn't sure about silicone microrings....I thought they might feel uncomfortable in my hair.

I have tried a few of the hairlocs and they have been comfortable (only the small ones though...the bigger locs hurt my hair).
