Hello!  I am thinking about getting extensions and I'd love some expert opinions!  Big%20smile

I have fine, thin, highlighted blond hair that is a little bit longer than shoulder length.  It has a few layers but most of it is one length and I also have bangs.  I am more interested in getting extensions to increase body and volume but I  certainly wouldn't mind an inch or so more in length either!

I have read a little about "Great Lengths" and "HairLocs", and I'm wondering if there are other brands or types that I should consider besides these two?  They seemed to be the most mentioned in articles and such.

I don't want the clip-in type and since I have fine hair, I want to be sure I get something that is safe and won't cause me to have to cut all my hair off after a few months because of the damage!  (That kind of scares me since I'm new to the world of extensions!)  It's also important to me that the extensions look natural and would be close to impossible for my co-workers to spot through my natural hair.  (I work in a stuffy, conservative office!)

And finally, I'm looking for a few good referrals for salons or hairdressers here in Nashville who are known for doing a great job with extensions.

Any suggestions or advice would be very much appreciated!

I think skin wefts would be your best option. If you do a search here you'll find a wealth of information on them. They are also easy to install, you can do it yourself in about a 1/2 hour if that long. Do a search on skin wefts and I'll post some here for you too. Have you read this yet? http://talk.hairboutique.com/forum_posts.asp?TID=30346 - http://talk.hairboutique.com/forum_posts.asp?TID=30346

I would definitely suggest a weft method. I would avoid the individual strand installs like GL or Hairlocs. If your hair is fine, and thin and probably more on the dry side and possible even a a bit brittle due to highlightlighting/bleaching (sounds like I am describing my own hair) then some type of weft method would be better suited for you.

Skin wefts would be great, but you may have a hard time finding a good quality blond hair on a skin weft. You may want to try hisandher hair goods, as some of the other colors are gettting decent reviews, but I have not tried them, and have yet to find a good quality blonde hair on a skin weft.

For blonde hair the best wefted hair I have used is Bohyme, its the hair I normally wear simply because I havent found anything that compares in quality for a reasonable price. Bohyme has always performed well for me and it stays beautiful for quite some time

You may want to look into either a sew in,  or a tape or glue method of install. And if you are interested in a DIY method the tape method is super easy for a DIYer.

I agree here with the ladies on trying a weft method first. My hair is fine and its working out quite well for me.

I have tried both Hairlocs and Great Lengths and really did not like either method enough to continue on. These two methods have a lot of financial backing for advertising so that is probably the main reason why they come up so often in searches.

My complaint with hairlocs was the bonds are crimped metal and seemed much to heavy for my fine hair. They slipped out like crazy and I found i could not even barely put any kind of tension on the hair without losing a few.

Great Legths is very high end as far as expense is concerned so be aware of that if you begin with that method. I found overall, they simply did not live up to my expectations for the money I dumped out for them. The hair, though decent in quality was too poofy and course for my texture and i just felt like I had a ridiculous amount of hair on my head. I wanted a smooth, sleek style and showed the stylist installing them over a dozen photos of the look i wanted which was sleek and straight. She says no problem. The hair arrives and its fluffy and wavy! I ask her about this and she says i called the company and they dont offer a bone straight hair! i really should have walked out then so it was my mistake. It would have been a can of worms though because she had made me pay for the hair and a deposit by then. i probably should have fought that but im one of those types that hates to upset people.

Try the weft method.

Weaves = fast affordable install, discreet, good for your hair with proper care and you can get the exact type of hair you desire and as much or as little as possible because you are totally in control.

Hello Nashville....we are neighbors, I live in Goodlettsville! Small world. I wore Great LEnghts and had them done in NAshville.
I  can try and find her number for you...can't remember her last name to save my soul but if your interested I'll try to to located that info.
I install with the tape method now and am getting ready to have a few rows sewn in.

First of all I loved my individual strand method by GL.....if you can afford them....then go for it! However I wanted 16-18 inchs put in and it took me apprx. 5 packs of hair and at 300 bucks a pack...well you get the  picture!
Plus I was having a straightner done and I wore them WAYYYYYY too long and caused matting and lots of knots just so I could get 7-8 months out of them. Now if you are looking for shorter hair and you have thinner hair than me, it will be MUCH cheaper than what I paid.  Don't try and wear them over 3 months....and as long as you can afford them and take care of them, you will love them.

Just remembered her name...Stacey Hall. She moved to another Salon, it's off the round-about on music rowe....coming off the interstate...go half way around and go straight....very short distance....then take a left...I think it's 17th ave.....block or so down on the right is a old house.
Maybe you can pull up her name on the directory.

Well hope this helps!
Tell her Karen Said Hello!

Thanks,
JeepGirl

Current install-Bohyme Bodywave #30 and #14 in the straight hair/ they didn't have the #14 in bodywave, so I mixed them...works great!

Hi.. I have fine/thin hair. I got great lengths before, loved them no problems at all.. Too much money though.

This time (last week) i got so cap extensions. Fusion and got them for thickness/fullness and  a little length too. I love them so much.  Just like the great lengths to me except half the cost.. My hair is soo much thicker.

Try looking for socap fusion extensions, to me they are just as great as great lengths were.

Here is after, I only got 80 strands for 400.00

Hi, I was planning to write in about getting hair extensions, but once I read your note it was exactly what I would have wrote !  i have the same blond baby fine hair.  I want it fuller but I too am terrified about damaging what I already have.  I tried to research skin wefts as the experts had suggested, but I can't find any salons that do it.  I am in the San Francisco area.  Have you decided to go with this application ??

My hair is much like the girl from Tenn. (shoulder length, fine, blonde) want volume mostly, but I'm so afraid of damaging what I have.  You recommended the Bohyme Weft type of extensions.  I am not a DIY, and I want the method that will stay in the best without damaging my baby fine strands.  What do you think ??  Do you know anything about So Cap ??

I live in the San Francisco area, anyone salon you might kno of ??

Thanks

I have fine blond hair as well and I looooved Great Lengths.  I am of the opposite train of thought and I wanted to try "the best" when I started getting extensions so I splurged and did it (and ended up getting them like 5 times in a row).  I would literally get stopped everywhere and asked what shampoos I used and complimented on my hair - I loooved it. Thick, shiny, perfect hair and lasted around 5 months.  They were as pretty the last month as they were the first.

HOWEVER, I have seen alot of bad GL installations.  The lady that did mine is in Vancouver, BC and is the west coast educator and they were awesome. So, if you do decide to try GL ask to look at anyone or any photos they have of their intalls and if you can tell what is the persons real hair and what strands are extensions, find someone else, because they can be undetectable if installed well, and for the money, you deserve to have it perfect.
I share expenses with my fiance now and am saving for a house so I just cant justify to him spending the $1,100 they cost me, understandably, so I am going to try some other methods for that reason only.  I have been wearing clip ins that I had dyed to match my highlighted hair and although they look good, I would like to have something more permanent and I hate when I lay down or fix a pony tail that the clips dig into my head.

If it were me and I wanted to make sure they were undetectable and good quality, I would go for the GL and use the next 4-5 months studying all the different methods on here because there are so many, and work my way down, but that is just my opinion as GL exceeded my expectations and I only had positive experiences with it, but that is just me and there are alot of gorgeous girls and install methods on here to use for inspiration.  Everyone and every head is different so it's just experimenting and finding something that looks good for you.
Just my 2 cents :) Good Luck!

Oh yeah and P.S.

My hair looked so frazzled and ugly when I had the GL taken out but I think it had alot to do with the fact that the GL were about 7 inches longer than my real hair, so I technically didn't have a good trim for over 5 months (just the GL hair) and I use a flat iron or curling iron almost every day. Sooo, I wouldn't use GL to grow my hair out because you do want to get a good chop when they come out so it would defeat the purpose in my opinion.  I usually like to keep my hair shoulder length and leave the fabulousness to the extension hair so I don't care either way. But, if you are trying to grow your hair out - maybe try a sew in?  My friend has that and her hair is gorgous too.  Maybe some of the other girls on here can answer better since I've never had one but from phoning around it costs about $200 per sew in (where I'm at) and it needs to be done every 6 weeks or 2 months so that sounds kind of pricey too.  I don't know...just thinking out loud.
Again, good luck! :)

Does anyone know if Great Lengths hair (which It seems through my research is the Rolls Royce of hair) can be applied with the weaved weft method ???  If I'm understanding the overwhelming amounts of info. I've gathered.  Quality of hair and method can both be selected correct ?  So if I have the fine, shoulder lenght blond hair and just want volume, and I'm ultra paranoid about ruining the hair I have and want the best quality and willing to pay for that, wouldn't I would want the GL hair, but maybe not their fusion method ??? Somebody please set me straight on this  !!

I have only heard of GL being available in fusion.  If you already have fine, thin hair, there is no way in the world I would do fusion.  Granted, I am not as expereinced as some of the other girls here.

I have had two fusion installs.  The first one was a complete disaster.  The seond one was not nearly as bad, but, certainly not worth the money in my opinion.  As far as buying wefted hair, there are plenty of brands you can get that are as good or better than GL.

GL doesn't sell their hair any other way other than for fusion.  Thats not to say you couldn't find some comparable hair in a different brand(which is what I am on a mission to find!) but GL doesn't sell their hair wefted or anything.  I wish they would branch out and do that but I have phoned and emailed them and they have no plans to do so :(

I live in the San Francisco area and have worn great lengths before. I am interested in getting hair locs but am scared about damage to my hair. I don't want to damage my hair. i want to grow it out and have my own hair again and stop wearing hair extensions. Anyone have any recommendations as to what would be best? Please don't reply if you only do one method ....I would love to hear from someone who has tried a few and found what worked and didn't work for them. I also have fine thin hair that is dark instead of light. I was told by someone who does extensions in my area that GL was better for my hair as the hairlocs would be too heavy and could cause damage...I am not sure what to believe. There is too much info out there.

Just a suggestion.. You might open yourself up to hear opinions even from those who only have done one method.. If someone has found what works for them their opinion might be valuable to you if you are open to it..

That said I must echo a sentiment I saw someone posted earlier today.. There is no such thing as a BEST method.. There is such thing as the best method that works for you.. A lot of that is going to depend on many variables including your budget, hair condition, lifestyle, etc. The information is overwhelming, so my suggestion is to take your time and do LOTS of research before you zero in on the method you have chosen..

About extentions being to heavy

when the hair is pre tipped, the amount of keratine that is used is for heavy hair

In thin hair you don't need the complete keratinetip.

cut 2mm keratine of, if necessary than cut in 2 strands.

I always do that in all fulheads install on top of the head (last row), and arround the face. As the bonds doesn't show that way and mix better with your own hair.

greath for highlights too.

I wore GL and was not happy with them but that was just me. The hair that GL uses is described as "Indian Temple Hair" I was not happy with it. It costs too much and did not last at all. It became rough and tangled within a month of wear. However I want to stress that was in my case only.

If you are looking for a comparable hair to GL and probably a better price to boot. I would recomend any Remi Indian hair from a reputable vendor. You will end up with the same or better quality hair. My choice has always been no processing to virgin state. I dont seem to have any luck with hair that has been treated in any shape or form prior to install. The extra money you will pay for virgin hair more than makes up for cost in the amount of installs it will last through in good condition. Just some friendly advice.

I know you guys are probably sick of me saying it, but in my opinion, russian hair works best for people with fine hair, because the texture matches. I myself have fine thin hair and this is the only hair I use on myself. I've worn extensions for the last 3 years straight and I've tried several different types of hair and this is the best for me. Plus, it's very lightweight because it's fine, so there is not a lot of weight pulling on my own hair. I'll see if I can load some pic's of a lady I did recently who had the FINEST, BLONDEST hair I've ever seen! She called it her "cotton candy" hair! I just added about 60 very tiny fusion strands with russian hair just to thicken up the ends. I couldn't go very high on her head to keep the bonds from showing.
