Hi, I'm a religous weft & glue wearer. I'm going to school next year for hair, but they don't teach extensions. I want to learn other extension methods. I'm going to eventually try all of them, but I was just wondering what the best one was.
I would like to know about fusion, linkies, shrinkies, and sew in. How long does each method last and, is the hair is reusable? Thanks. Feel free to share other methods too. :)

Hey Babygirl, I used to wear clip ins every day but I got really tired of them. Now I have a sew in. Two tracks that have two wefts on each track. It lasts in my hair for six weeks. I think fusion can last longer but DIY fusion is a pain in the arse. Also, it's impossible to do proper sectioning when you're doing your own fusion and over time you'll ruin your hair. It's best to have help. EDIT: I forgot to answer your second question. Yes you can re-use the hair if you do a sew in (as long as the hair holds up). Try to get hair that is remi (cuticle aligned). ------------- |

Hi Mal, I don't run into problems doing my own fusion because I had the experience of doing my daughter's so it was fairly easy but pre-tipping 100's upon 100's of bonds.... OMG. Now THAT is a major pain in the butt. Babygirl, one extension technique really isn't better than another, it's just personal preference. The wig and the weft methods are much faster, and there are several, but the strand methods usually last longer. Each installs length of wear can be extended with proper maintenance.

Wow- that's not really a question that can be directly answered, except to say that there is no best method for everyone. For some people, the weft methods are best due to the added coverage you can usually get with wefts. Also, many people really do not like the feel of strand-by-strand methods. When done properly, weft installs done with adhesive tapes (protac, proflex , airflex , supertape) can last for 4-6 weeks and can be very easy to install and remove with little to no damage to the wearer's hair. Sew-in methods are often very convenient for people who would like to wear the hair for longer periods of time and who just want to wear a few tracks. Sew-ins are generally very low maintenance. In general, the weft methods done with bonding glue or tapes is fairly easily done do-it-yourself. The biggest pro to strand-by-strand in my opinion is that when done properly they can flow more naturally than weft installs. Some people like the feel better. It is very important that the strand-by-strand install is done very precisely and carefully with CLEAN sectioning so no stray hairs are caught in the bond/rings (this will cause breakage of those stray hairs and pulling). Strand-by-strand takes more practice and is more difficult for do-it-yourself. Fusion is tricky and takes practice; the rings and shrinkthings are a bit more user-friendly. Clip-ins are very nice for people who do not want the commitment. They can be taken and and out as desired. Also, if people just wish to add some highlights or a splash of funky color, the clip-ins are great. The hair will last longer with clip-ins being as it does not have to be washed as frequently, and can be taken out before a shower or bedtime. Personal preferences: I usually wear clip-ins because I do not ALWAYS want to wear extensions. I find the weft and tape methods to be great and easy to do for longer installs. I personally have not found the right strand-by-strand method for myself, but I do not rule it out. Perhaps someday I will learn to like them. In a nutshell, each person will find a method that is right for them depending on many factors.
