Subject: Another GL disaster

Well it appears from all the other posts I am not the only one who mistakenly had GL put in. I just had them redone about 3 weeks ago and I have probably lost 1 1/2 bundles. I have no idea how much hair is in a bundle. They are not lasting me more than 2 months. The sad thing is I have to keep redoing them because of the terrible shape my hair is in. My main question I am hoping to get answered is what are my other options and I am also curious as to what the real cost of GL hair is per bundle? Is it $300/bundle? I ask this because I am supposably getting a deal.
Any responses are greatly appreciated...
TIA

You don't have to keep getting GL, you have options. You can get fusion from stylist who don't use extension "systems". Where do you live? Maybe someone here is near you. Fusion isn't your only option either. Look here, This has everything you ever wanted to know about extensions. And if you still have questions we'll answer them. http://talk.hairboutique.com/forum_posts.asp?TID=30346                       But I tell you one thing, there's no way you should have to get a new install of fusion every two months. Are you getting them all replaced or just some bi-monthly?

I am in Colorado and I am getting them all replaced. Usually by the time I go get them replaced most of them have fallen out.

That sucks. I'm sorry to hear that.
I think Ms. Honey is right, you have so many other options.
Also, Milehigirl is in Colorado (I'm not sure where?) but she's
super nice and a wealth of information.

Do not go back, that an orderTongue. If they're not replacing them for free don't use them. The loss is excessive. There's no way you should be getting them redone every other month. How did they tell you to prep your hair for the fusion? Did the tell you "no conditioner"?

What is the condition of your hair? Why do you think you can only wear fusion?

prior to extensions, my hair was not real thick but not thin by any means. It is naturally curly so it tends to be a little dry. I have not completely taken them out in a few months so I really have no idea what shape it is in except at the nape it is only a couple inches long. There are also several other spots where it is very short. They never told me to prep my hair first.  I wish I had found this site prior to extensions...Cry Did i mention it only took her 1 1/2 hours to put 3  bundles in. Does that sound right?

It depends on how many strands are in your install. Do not feel bad. If you don't know then you don't know, right. Many of us came here in the same state.
Have you told your extensionist that you're having excessive loss? If so what did she say?

Can anyone tell me the cost  for a gl bundle??

I have no idea. I think I once heard $200 but I really don't know.
She needed to wash your hair first. Have you called her? Perhaps
she will stand behind her work.

I don't either but I know it's an expensive system. Did you telling your stylist they were coming out? Did you save the hair?

What length of GL do you have in?

Posted By: harleygrl
Date Posted: September 26 2007 at 3:40pm
I did tell her that i have lost an excessive amnt. Also when I brush my hair I can cover my sink with hair that falls out. Not the actual strand but hair itself.
I have not really thrown a fit or questioned her because She says she is giving me a discount and only charging me for the hair but I really do not know because I do not know her cost for the hair. I almost feel guilty questioning her because I have known her for a very long time. What do you do in this situation?

Posted By: harleygrl
Date Posted: September 26 2007 at 3:42pm
I would guess it is 16-18 inches..

Posted By: Ms.Honey
Date Posted: September 26 2007 at 3:47pm

She does not know what she's doing or you're not following instructions. Since it appears that she hasn't given you any instructions we'll have to go with the former. Stop letting her put GL in your hair. After the first time she should have sat you down to see what you were doing before reinstalling them. She didn't wash your hair or tell you not to condition it first?

Are you sure it's Great Lengths? I don't typically hear that it sheds.

I would call her and tell her what's going on.

Date Posted: September 26 2007 at 3:54pm

Usually she does wash it first because she colors it. This last time she did not wash it. The instructions I was given the first time she put them in was to not wash for 48 hours, use antitap water when i do wash, do not wash every day and do not use products that have alcohol. I use the brush I was given, i use pureology products and when I do wash it I use the antitap water. As far as I know it is GL because it was wrapped in the GL paper.

Posted By: harleygrl

I better clarify.. she gave me those instructions after the first set was put in. Never have I been told not to condition it prior to having new bundles put in.

Do not let her put GL in your hair ever again. Going to her is a waste of you time and certainly your money. You have to decide what you want to do next. More fusion from someone else, do the fusion yourself, or try another extension technique.

Ahhh good Ol' GL I wonder if they ever read this site, I paid 1800 for broken hair and lies. Well first off are you losing the whole strand itself of is the hair shedding? Like MS. Honey said there are alot more choices out there. I have tried a few, took a break for a few weeks now trying the skin weft method soon.

Well GL comes in 40cm (16") or 50cm(20") so i would guess its the 16" hair you have in.  I dont know if the hair is more expensive in the US but in the UK the 16" hair is nowhere near the price per bundle you have been told it is, about half the price actually if not less.

Your stylist should definetly have pre washed you hair with the GL PH Solution before applying the hair.

If i was you i would try a different method or brand of hair, and do not let this lady touch your hair again.  I can only assume its down to her poor application method that your are having these problems as GL hair does not usually shead.

Hope you get the situation sorted out.

The cost alone makes me really doubt that they are Great Lengths, plus I have been doing GL in my salon for years and not one client has experienced the problems you are having. I suggest you find a new salon but dont expect to pay 300.00 per bundle.

Let me ask you this, why is GL so expensive? I mean there are alot of great quality hair out there for a fraction of the price. is it the hair you are paying for or the name? paying 1800 for a full head to use one time is absurd, unfortunatly I was one of the dumb ones to fall in the GL trap and my hair real hair was garbage when they came out. I see alot of people post on here that they stand by GL for there extension technique but lets really talk how much does the hair really cost?

It's all in the marketing of the product. You pay for the name and the promises they make. It's like with Russian hair. It's no better than any other hair on the market but it is promoted as such. People automatically think if it costs more then it must be better and that's not necessarily true.

I totally agree! I would just like to know how much the stylist actually pay for the hair. the girl I went to said it was $900 and back then i had no idea what hair cost. Now I know what I can pay for good quality hair I am kind of pissed right now. How much commission is really involved? does the stylist or GL get the commission. I still have not heard ( which I asked a few times ) what the hair really cost. To me GL is hair rape.

My hairdresser told me that each bundle costs her $75 and she charges $12/strand (full strand) or $7 (1/2 strand) to install and that is inclusive of the hair price. She has been doing hair extensions for over 20 years and doesn't mind sharing her pricing. You would see her for her technique.  I don't understand why hair extension artists are so hush hush about the hair price. You always want good quality hair but it is the expertise of the hair extension artist that is worth the extra dollars. I for one would pay for a good extension artist to put in my extensions than try to save a buck and skimp on crappy quality and loose my hair in the process. By the way ...the girl I see does GL, Hair locs, braids, and shrinks.

How much hair is in a bundle? What is a half strand of hair? The length or the width?

One more question. If the Great Lengths system is used with non great lengths hair, will that affect the removal process?

sorry but $300 per bundle is a rip off. I dont get where one person says $75 bundle and then Club Salon says she doubts they are great lengths because I would have paid more per bundle. Anyway, GL is the worst thing I have done to my hair and there have been times I have brushed it and it has come out by the roots. Now I have to figure out what I am going to do with my ruined hair. I would not recommend GL to anyone.

Posted By: Sofiaone
Date Posted: October 01 2007 at 2:00pm
There are 25 strands in a bundle. As with all hair methods, the expertise of the extension artist is key. A good application and takedown will not cause any damage or minimal damage to your hair. If it hurts, leave the salon immediately. I have worn GL before and never had any issues with takedown as the person doing it was really gentle and didn't damage my hair. I saw the removed strands and very little of my hair was attached (only the naturally shed strands). I have tried the locs too and they are great. they slip out more but are gentle to your hair so if you are worried about hair loss, maybe try them first or try a weft like some of the girls on this site.

If you hair is falling out (ie. the newly attached strands). It could be that they were (a) improperly applied, (b) your hair was not clairified, (c) your own hair is too oily or silky to hold the fusion, or (d) you are tugging too hard on the hair when brushing. Either way, it sounds like you should go to someone else for hair extensions and maybe even try another method.

what about locs/links instead?

ok so I am not a cosmetologist so the option of doing something myself is out of the question. I did find somoene in my area with 25 years experience but she does the tract wefts. It will cost about $2000 initially for the hair and the time. She says it is italian hair and she has glowing references. The gal who did my GL i have known for 28 years so how do you know how to trust and how do you know that you can trust someone. I  am just so disappointed in my gl experience. I have to get these gl 's out of my hair. I brushed last night and literally had my roots pulled out...So sad..........

There is no way on GOD's green earth that you should be paying $2000 dollars for some wefts. Please tell me that's a typo and you mean $200. Find a hair that matches your hair's texture. Italian, Russian... it's hair. You can find silky texture or Euro textured Indian hair for a fraction of the cost and looks and feels exactly the same. Know why? Because it probably is.

It's sad but this has nothing to do with the brand, but with the application.

I wear strands for about 12 years now, the first years they ware GL.

Why GL? because there wasn't any other better brand on the market here.

I hear a lot of story's about GL getting worse over the years. In my opinion the are still the same as years ago, but other brands just catches up with them.

Ok GL is expensive, but in my country you get good service for your money.
If you want GL just keep in mind:

Go to an extension artist, he/she is the first judge of the quality of the stands that he asked for. If he is not pleased, he will not install them. If he is not pleased with the condition of your own hair, he will also refuse an install.

Go to the same extension artist every month or so to wash your hair, as he/she can keep an eye on the quality of the hair, the bonds and the tangling,…. He should give further advice about taking care of the hair. If a strand has falling out, he will re-attach it.

As for any other brand, buy and use the shampoo and conditioner of the brand they are recommending.

Make sure that you get what you are paying for. Ask your certificate of the strands, they are your guarantee and authenticity certificate (this certificate comes with al the GL strands). Ask your extension artist to write the name on the certificate of the shampoo and conditioner that came along and the date of the install.

If something goes wrong with the extensions, go back. If he can’t solve the problem, ask him to contact an adviser from GL to have a look.

If he does crappy installs frequently, he will lose his GL-license.

I ones had a problem with the GL-bonds after a 2 1/2 months install. And I was given a free install and free strand.

I am not a GL-lover, there are other brands who gives the same guarantee.

What I meant to say is: If something goes wrong with my Armani spectacle frame, it will be repaired for free, or will be replaced for free. If I have a non brand, I throw it away.

So how much should i be paying for hand tied sewn in wefts ? I believe I was quoted with 3 wefts. How do I go about finding someone good. The lady I received the quote from is specialized in hair loss, she does a lot with cancer patients, participates in locks of love, has several references and everyone I have spoken to has nothing but positive things to say. There are so many methods and everyone says their method is the best. One says tape is bad for your hair and pulls it out, another swears by tape. What is a person to do who doesnt have the expertise in this field. How do I find a good stylist in my area??? Please help!!

Harlygrl.... Is the sew-in lady you spoke to have the first initial S. and in the north metro area? I just hate to put someone's name on blast.... If that is her, she uses Giovanni and Son hair. It is good hair, but, no where near $2,000. I was going to have a sew-in done with her. I looked at her portfolio (looked good), but, I got my hair cut by her and HATE the cut.

I am reluctant to be too critical. She seemed nice and my hair was very damaged by my fusion that I had just had removed. I haven't gone back to her for the weave though in large part because my cut is so uneven and "mullety" looking.

Anyway, what I have seen is that 1) extensions are very expensive here 2) I haven't found anyone that is highly recommended. All of them seem to have unhappy customers.

I would guess that is about right. I was told that So. Cap. is $115 in bundles of 50. If GL is $75 for a bundle of 25 that would make it about $150 for 50 (It is possible they charge less for higher quantity).

Anyway, based on GL being a little more expensive in most areas, that is probably about right on the wholesale price. In other words, some of these stylists are making a FORTUNE for the install.

Hey Harlygrl...sorry for three posts in a row, ladies! I forgot to add that if the lady I mentioned is the same one, she also told me she only uses 4 oz for a full install. Most of the ladies I have talked to use closer to 6-8 oz for a full weave (some less of course). If she is charging you $2K for three tracks, she is making about $1,800 profit.

I wonder if it is another girl in the same salon? I know there was someone else there that does extensions too. I have only found a couple people here that do sew-ins. The lady that I mentioned is actually more on the NW side, but, not far north.

Well I cant tell you about GL , because I dont use them, but I know that a bundle of 10 pieces of Socap hair runs about $20-25. So, if I was installing just 100 pieces on a client just the hair alone would run about $250, that is not including labor/installation cost. I know GL is supposed to be a bit more expensive so maybe it is possible that $300 is the price for the hair. Still, it should last longer than 2 months. Though I dont recommend that you wear extensions for longer than 3 months , you should not have to keep going back as often as you have been  , nor should you have damage.

hope this helps...

I just took the SoCap USA class and the hair is $115 per bundle of 50 (not including CA tax if you live in CA) for the straight hair and $130 per bundle for wavy texture.

Also, is all of their hair a synthetic/human blend?

Great Lengths are by far, in my opinion, T-H-E best system of them all.  I've had Cinderella Hair...cheaper but shed so bad I was ready to shave my head...I went back to GL and, though they are expensive (around $600 for a full head) they are the most natural.  A word of advise...wear your hair in a pony tail when sleeping or having (sex..oops, is it okay to say that?Embarrassed)

About five years ago, after wearing GL's for two years, I couldn't afford them anymore and that's when I discovered http://www.eternalhairextensions.com - Eternal Hair Extensions .

They are a do-it-yourself at home extension system that is affordable (under $50), semi-permanent and re-usable and give you the opportunity to try hair extensions and see if you like them.  I've been wearing them  for over 12 years (excluding the two years I wore GL's) and my own hair has grown out to the length of the extensions so now all I wear is a few pieces for added volume.  So they're a great way to grow out your hair without looking like a skinned cat and for a mere $50 investment, what's to lose?

Good luck and here's to LONG HAIR!!!   Clap

I'm so paranoid about my hair. I got GL installed last Friday and have only washed my hair twice since the install. While I was brushing my hair on Sunday one fell out, bond and all. It's not a big deal though, I can't even notice. Anyway, since Tuesday night it feels like my hair has really thinned out... it doesn't feel as thick as it did before and it's not as heavy.. I keep thinking "What if a bunch have fallen out?" but I've felt around my head and that doesn't seem to be the case.

Could it be from straightening it? Or that maybe some hairs have fallen out of the bond? Maybe I'm just used to the feel of having extensions now?

I have an appointment for a checkup in 2 weeks. I'm probably just really paranoid.

It sounds like they've loosened up a little and you're accustomed to the weight of them now.

Just my two cents but I loved my GL.  I had them installed at an awesome salon in Vancouver BC - the girl who did mine is the west coast educator for GL.  I got 4 bundles...20 inches and it cost me $1050 before tip and I NEVER LOST ONE BOND.  I really think alot of it has to do with the stylist doing the install because I have had GL a handfull of times and literally never lost one bond and my hair is fine/blond.  To the OP: If you are having that much trouble with your hair I wouldnt be giving your styist one more penny and find someone who actually knows what they are doing.  I met with 5 or 6 women who were certified in GL and I really started to question if I even wanted to spend that much money because I just didnt get a good feeling about them and their before and afters were just not that impressive.  After meeting with the girl who finally did mine, she was so meticulous and professional (not like the Sales Lady feeling I got from the others) I felt comfortable and decided to go for it and they were AWESOME.  I feel bad that this company gets such a bad rap because I think there are alot people who are certified who shouldnt be and it ends up in a disaster.

HI MintMocha- How is the condition of your hair now? how long have you worn them? I have worn them off and on for about 3 yrs and don't have any issues with them. I was going to try the links/locs to see if they felt better/different but I alway like the GL. I agree with you that it is really the expertise of the artist who does the install and takedown. I have lost a few bonds but that is normal....it also depends if you have oily hair or not. I usually had them replaced every 9-12 weeks depending on how fast my own hair grew during that time. Have you tried any other methods?
