How dark is your hair? If it`s light brown you can probably lighten it successfully on your own with a box, but if it`s much darker you may end up with an obvious brassy tone (I did! Never doing THAT again!) Haircolor from a box usually can`t lift darker hair to a nice blonde; instead, it often only goes to red/orange, in which case you have to bleach it to a sunny shade.
I do recommend going to salon for your first coloring experience, or at least to determine how your hair will lighten with coloring products. (I wish I had.......thankfully it`s mostly grown out now.) My personal advice: always proceed with caution when experimenting with color if a natural look is your goal. Good luck!!!!!!! :-)

my hair is medium dark brown....but not real dark...my friend dies her hair blonde so what i was going to try is cut a piece of my hair and test it with her color and see how it turns out....... but yeah i will probably venture in to the salon.....or decide not to fool with it and maybe just get some highlights....
thanks for the input!!

You might want to check out the following site. It has great advice on how to go blonde. Either do it yourself or going to a salon you need a lot of info. Check it out. http://www.telepath.com/rcs/goblonde/Howto.htm - http://www.telepath.com/rcs/goblonde/Howto.htm

I was thinking like a golden blonde not to white that is what I was going for.... especially since I am going from medium brown to blonde it will be a big step and I may freak out.... ha ha but who knows I may like it enough to want to go lighter.
what about you??

I am a medium to dark brown now - a little grey! I am considering a LOT of highlights to really it lighter - enough to cover the grey. I figure I can always bleach it all if I decide to go REALLY blonde. Still trying to get up the nerve. Getting closer to saying YES! I will be going to a salon. I know better to try the do-it-yourself method.

yeah i think if i decide to go through with it i will go to the salon...i don`t need to look like a clown with orange red hair!!!
but i am still tossing the idea around.....who knows it is hard cause one minute i want to then the next i don`t.
let me know if you do and how it turns out... i had thought about the highlights too...we will see
i am sure i won`t perm it. my hair is sooo straight and thick and people tell me all the time they wished that they had my hair....
