My Mom is thinking about dying her hair. I told her I'd ask here for advice for her. Smile

She has salt and pepper hair, probably more white then black. She would like to be a light ash brown. Also, her hair is very very thin. She's kinda afraid to do anything with it.

I have another question.........

Does anyone know of a site that shows you how to apply dye to hair and/or root touch up, something with pictures or video?

Most of the over the counter hair dyes have web sites that will show you how to apply their products. Look on the package for the link.

It can be risky if the hair is thin.  Dye chemicals always make your hair fall out a little.  Usually its not bad enough that anyone would notice or worry about it, so, it kind of depends exactly how thin it is.  If she already feels that she can see too much scalp through her hair, she probably should avoid chemicals.

If not though, and she does want to do it, go to a pro.  To get black hair to lift to lighter brown, you can't just throw the dye on it and expect it to work, it may need to be lifted first, plus gray hair can be resistent.  It will be easiest to let a pro handle it.

Ok thanks Susan, I'll tell her that.

Thanks Jojo for your reply. I bought ION hair color. I read their directions few times and didn't understand it. I did go to their web site and they only show video clips of special techniques. I called the 800#, the girl told me to put dye on middle of hair first 15 min. then roots and ends for the rest of the time. This sounds hard to do lol. I think I'll just dye it all over and hope it turns out ok. Confused

Are you doing your whole head?  If it's a virgin process then you need to apply the dye to the ends and midsection first and lastly the roots--this prevents hot roots. Hot roots are when the roots are lighter than the rest of the hair.  If the other hair is already dyed then it's a different situation.  I once let my hair grow out about 3 inches and had to touch it up.  I used 30 vol. on the 2 inches farthest away from the scalp down the shaft.  Then I went back and applied the rest of the color with 20 vol. to the roots.  It looked very even, no hot roots.  A bit complicated to do though.

Hope this helps.

Try Robert Craig for your mom.  I think it would work if she is trying for a color close to her own color.

I don't have dye on my hair, just high lights.

Thanks for the links Rebekah, they are very helpful.
