right now my hair is straight and very boring. i want to try something different with it. my question is if i wanted my hair layered, do i just walk into a hair salon and say i want it layered? or are there different kinds of layered hair? do you understand what i'm saying? btw, i know absolutely nothing about hair. i've never had my hair cut at a salon before. usually i just do it myself or have a friend cut it cause it's just a trim and not styled.

I think the best thing to do would be to take pictures of cuts you like in.  Have a consultation before any cutting is done.
If you never had your hair cut at a salon and don't know much about hair, then the chances of you getting something you don't like increases, unless you are prepared with pics and talk about it.
