But I have trouble working out which is the best method to use ona particular persons hair. What do you guys like to decide by? Thickness of hair? any advice would be great

 

also how do you know how many strands are necsessary when we need to order the hair. Like we went to order for my friends hair, which is semi thick, but I dont know the average. I was thinking around 120?

 *their lifestyle (how much time do they want to spend on their hair-daily styling and also time in my chair )

 

*check to see if the hair is oily

 

* client's budget to spend on hair and proper products to maintain it

 

*if they have heard of any extension methods that they may prefer (for example, the client who has a best friend who has "XYZ Extensions" and she wants that type)

 

*length, texture, thickness of client's natural hair- It takes more strands to cover shorter, thicker, or curlier hair.  Wefts, since they are a 'curtain' of hair, tend to provide better coverage

 

*ask the client what she thinks about methods that use adhesive- some people absolutely do not want adhesive in their hair

 

* ask if they have any metal allergies- some people have nickel  or copper allergies which might irritate their scalp if you use micro rings

 

*ask if they have a latex allergy.  Some bonding agents contain latex.

 

*is the hair really brittle and can't support extensions on a 24/7 basis.  Maybe suggest clip ins.

 

Most stylists who work with many types of extensions will also develop a favorite method that they like to use.  I really like silicone micro rings since they are gentle on fine hair and there's no adhesive to remove upon removal.

 

As far as how many strands to order, it depends on:

 

* client's natural length and how much do they want to extend it

*client's density of natural hair

*density of particular manufacturer's hair strand.  I think most strands are between .5-1 gram each.

 

On average, if Ia client wants 18" hair and their own hair is about shoulder length, and natural density is average it usually takes 200 strands or so.

 

I would say always order more hair then you need because you would rather have extra left over than not enough to complete the job and have an unhappy client.
