I`m interested in learning how to style my hair like it`s from the 1930s-1940s. I found the wondeful areticle "The Anatomy of a Curl" which detalis the formation of the essential pin curl. I`ve looked and looked for directions on finger waves, but haven`t found any detailed enough for my limited styling skills. Any information with instructions or pictures of vintage hair styles would be great!! Thanks.

It used to be that every person going to school to be a hairdresser had to master finger waves by using a comb. Not something to look forward to. I don`t know if they still teach the technique since it is rarely called for today. I guess you could argue it is a way to see that the graduate can correctly use certain appliances and techniques. Making finger waves takes time and practice. Good luck and let us know how it turns out for you. ;)

I`m not sure if it`s an accepted means of doing finger waves - but if you have big saloon-type bobby pins (the ones that are about 3 inches long) - you can use those. After you get out of the shower - takes small sections - about two- three inches wide and put the bobby pins down the section of hair - maybe five or six (or however many you want)- about an inch or so apart. Alternate the direction that you put them in - from the right, then the left, right, left, right, left, etc. - you might have to force the pins each direction a little bit so you actually get a wave effect - then either let it air dry, or blow dry on low. You could put a little bit of setting lotion or gel on your hair b/4 putting the pins in. I`ve tried this and with a little practice, it works.
