Hello everyone!

Alrighty, well, I posted a thread here a couple of months ago asking for advice on how to cover my horrible highlights. The thread in question is this one: http://talk.hairboutique.com/forum_posts.asp?TID=56175 - http://talk.hairboutique.com/forum_posts.asp?TID=56175

I've dyed my hair twice within about 6 weeks of each other with Herbal Essences Chardonnay Shimmer (permanent I believe) since those pics were taken and my hair is now like this:

I really like that colour and want to keep my hair that way, but will I really damage my hair if I keep dying all over ever few weeks with a permanent colour? I don't think it particularly looks in terrible condition or anything, but after I dyed it the second time my hair did definitely feel drier. When I had highlights done before all this the solution was mainly spread quite thickly over my layers and the ends of the hair are now pretty dry and prone to splitting. Do you think it might be an idea to ask to have even shorter layers next time I go to the hairdresser and if so, how short?

Also, are there any products I should be using which are designed specifically for hair which gets dyed every few weeks? I currently use Timotei golden highlights shampoo and conditioner which I love because it's so mild, plus I use Pantene Pro-V restoratives leave-in conditioner.

I've found the no-ammonia, low PH demis are much more gentle on hair and last a few weeks. I strongly recommend them, especially the goldwell colorance, which is an acid base that you need to mix with goldwell colorance lotion (not regular developer). My hair was fried until I started using this color.

I also use biolage ultra hydrating conditioner about twice a week (no shampoo, just conditioner) and chi silk infusion as a leave-in when it's almost dry and now my hair is soft, silky and shiny. It's in better condition than it has been in years, despite multiple bleachings and much abuse.

For your hair, I'd use a demi color every three weeks, four if you can stretch it. Use a 10 developer with it or the goldwell lotion if you use goldwell colorance. The biolage conditioner will make it soft and moist, use that two or three times a week. Shampoo at most once a week. The chi silk infusion will add shine, it's like a gloss that you can put in when you need it. Claude on this forum recommends it and I purchased it on his rec and love it. You can use it every day.

Why do you need to color all over everytime? You should only color your new growth when needed. Continuing to overlap the color WILL damage it.Unless you do use a demi or semi like zaxwrit suggested.

Thanks for the advice! The reason I coloured all over again is because I originally only coloured my hair to cover up the highlights, then it seemed to fade and I started getting roots so I thought I may as well cover all the hair. I'm not very experienced with hair dye, so I wasn't sure if I needed to get a whole bottle of stuff for just the roots or what. Confused

So I'm not going to do that again because from the sounds of it that is not healthy! Certainly doesn't feel healthy in any case.

I'm going to see if I can get some of that Chi Silk Infusion conditioner off Ebay.

Do you have a beauty supply store around you such as Sally's? You should really get some neutral protein filler. You add it in with the color and it helps keep hair from getting as damaged.
So,you can color just your roots most of the time, then when you feel like color needs refreshing and want to color all over, use the protein filler with it.It makes a huge difference. Just dont use it everytime because it is possible for hair to have too much protein.

**Edited to fix spelling!

I'd recommend heading out to a beauty supply store and getting a heavy conditioner or hair masque.  They can do great things for dry hair.  If you don't have a beauty supply store nearby, try Aussie 3 Minute Miracle and leave it in for 15-20 minutes.  It can do great things.

Thank you! I think I actually have a sample of that Aussie stuff somewhere, I think it's meant to cure frizz or something.

It may be really obvious, but how much should you let the roots come through before dying them? I read somewhere that you shouldn't put dye too close to the end of the root because heat from your scalp causes the colour to go brassy or something.

The roots just dye faster then the rest of the hair because next to the scalp is warm so the heat accelerates the dyeing process. That is why most dyes say to apply to the roots last.
However,if only coloring the roots,it is no problem. Most people color their roots after 4-6 weeks. Some wait longer. It is really a matter of personal preference.Myself,I could never go more then 4 weeks.

Ok, thank you jules. Smile I think I'm just going to get it all chopped anyway, so hopefully soon there will be no need for dye.
