I was reading a post in the product reveiw forum and someone mentioned that protein treatments (ie, joico deep penetrating reconstruction, redken deep feul etc..) if used more than once a week can actually be bad for the hair and cause breakage? what's up with that!? just wondering if anybody knows the science behind this or if it's even true. Any information on protein fortification is appretiated! I just bought the big 2L of joico dpr. and I love it .(80$ a jug) but never the less, I don't wanna over do it now that I have lots!

I don't know about proteins, I don't use that type of conditioning, but silicones can do that.  Check to see if your product has silicones in it (anything in the ingredients ending in "cone" or "one").  You just use a clarifying shampoo to remove these once every 2 months or so.  I would imagine this shampoo would also work for protein buildup, if it exists.

I dont know the science behind it,but too much protein on hair can be bad.

It will make it kinda CRUNCHY. I have NEVER had this happen from using a conditioner with protein in it though (probably because the percentage of protein in conditioner is actually very small) But I have had it happen when using Protein fillers (a product meant for hair coloring)

But using once or twice a week when hair is really damaged can work wonders on the hair.

Protein hardens the hair to stengthen it.  To much protein & the hair  becomes to hard making the hair brittle.  Always use moisture behind the protein treatment to ensure it does not become brittle.  A strong protein treatment would be applied maybe once a week, followed with moisture.  I would only do it every other week or once a month.  With hair extensions I would only use moisture.
