HI There!

I have thick long straight hair (some medium corse). It's almost down to my lower back. This is the first time I grew my hair this long and would really love to continue on. I am really excited!

My hair is dyed and is a little dry, mostly the bottom half. I don't think it's that bad but I do get breakage... not so much of the split ends though... thank goodness.

I am currently using Suave (coconut for dry hair). I like it, smells nice and it makes my hair soft. Can someone tell me if this is a good shampoo? I am new to all these and still not familiar with ingredients. I have tried different shampoos... from the expensive ones to cheap ones. I have not found one that really works great on my hair. My other problem is that I sometimes get flakes. Depends on the shampoo.

I am thinking of changing my whole line of hair products and this is where I need you guys.

Can you guys can tell me the best product(s) you are using or can recommend?

1. Shampoo for dry hair
2. Conditioner for dry processed hair
3. Anti Frizz
4. Deep conditioning
5. Heat protectant for blow drying

I think these are the only things I use on a daily basis... feel free to add!

Thank you so much in advance!

Hi CrazyGirl!

It's great to see your enthusiasm.

How often do you wash your hair? If you're doing so every day (and blow-drying, too), you may want to reconsider the frequency to which you subject your hair to the process. For dry and dyed hair, moisturizing shampoos and deep/reconstructive conditioners will probably help most. I like Edwin Paul S&C because, although I don't color, don't wash daily, and never blow-dry, my hair has a tendency to be dry.

Hope this helps!

Hi there! Dave has given you some excellent advice--the less you shampoo/dry your hair the better. (BTW Dave, awesome job moderating this board and especially at starting discussions!)

CrazyGirl, wow, if you're going to revamp your entire product selection based upon our advice you're one brave gal! First, let me make a few suggestions of what NOT to use on your hair if it is dry and prone to flakes: Avoid shampoos with sodium lauryl sulfate, TEA-lauryl sulfate or sodium olefin sulfate in the ingredient list. There are many others to avoid but these are among the most common drying surfactants out there.

Personally, I can enthusiastically recommend the Redken All Soft line (you'll hear that one several times on this board if you stick around long enough,) the Biotera and Nature's Therapy line at Sally Beauty, Joico K-Pak shampoo, Frizz Ease Glistening Creme, Aura Almond Cherry Bark conditioner and Sebastian Laminates conditioner. I just tried Neutrogena overnight therapy, a leave-in spray that I actually don't rinse out and I like it a lot. I'm trying to find a suitable replacement for my favorite leave-in, Jhirmack HeatCare which has apparently been discontinued. :-(

Also, you mentioned you are learning about ingredients--which is great and bravo to you for empowering yourself against deceptive advertising! I have a rather extensive ingredient list compiled from a bunch of books, and while I can't guarantee it's the final word in haircare since I'm no scientist I've had a lot of people--including a lady in the Netherlands who works for Joico (!)--ask for it. Send me a board mail and I'll email it to you if you want.

There are many, many good products out there--I've only named a few of the ones I've tried and like--I'm sure other nice people will recommend a few to sample. Good luck and keep us posted!

Hi Dave! Hi Lyris!

Thanks for the prompt response! Yesterday, I went and bought Redken outshine and used it today for the first time. I loved it! Smelled nice and made my hair soft!!! Without the greasy look. I was using (and loved it too) Paul Mitchell gloss but it weighs my hair down so much.

To Lyris... I don't know how to send you a board mail. Here is my email address though... Jhaided@hotmail.com

Unfortunately, I have to shampoo and condition everyday... My scalp will get too oily if I don't. I have to blow dry too, otherwise my hair will be really frizzy. I have thick, kinda corse hair type. I use Nature's Therapy Heat Protectant before I blow dry and I just bought the ION blow dryer.

I have heard so much about the Aura Almond Cherry Bark conditioner - I think I will buy that today. Thanks again!!!

CrazyGirl,
How do you like the ION blow dryer? I haven't used a blow dryer in awhile, but I'm thinking of getting one for those emergency times. Does it work much better than a regular dryer?

Hi purple--I'd be happy to share the ingredient list with you (you asked via boardmail) but unfortunately when I tried to reply it said you don't have it set up to accept mail at this time (?) Regardless it's a really long list that I would have to send as a Microsoft word attachment, which I couldn't do with boardmail anyway. If you are comfortable sending me your email address via boardmail I will glad to shoot it your way. :-)

Hi Lyris... I think you got me mixed up with Purple? Unless she also asked for the ingredient list? I have typed in my email address on my first response but here it is again...

Jhaided@hotmail.com

Thank you so much!!!

Hi Purple!

I like using it. Made my hair soft and not so frizzy. I think it dries faster too.

Hi CrazyGirl,

When your scalp is accustomed to daily doses of shampoo, it is tuned to cranking out high volumes of oil.

But when your scalp is accustomed to infrequent doses of shampoo, it puts out oil at a much slower rate.

The problem is going from point A to point B. It should not be done overnight. It takes a gradual process of increasing that inter-washing interval.

You're at every 24 hours now (let's say, @6am). Say you decided to try to increase it to every 32 hours (assuming you were willing to schedule your weekend! around this). Start on Friday, 6am as usual. Then, Saturday at 2pm. Then Sunday at 10pm. Then Tuesday at 6am. Check your scalp. Is it getting oily less quickly? If so, you have begun the progression toward increasing the interval between applications of S&C.

When you comb or brush your hair, detangle first and then use a boar-bristle brush to spread the minute amounts of oil through the length of your hair. This will help tame the frizzies.

Something to think about.

And thank you Lyris for your very kind words. Some days I wish I had more energy to share here, but I do sometimes try to facilitate the topical thoughts that are surely rattling around in all our brains.
