we've been dying my hubby's hair to cover his gray for about 6 years.
he's now about 50% gray, from a medium brown color.

he used to have long, past shoulder-blades length hair, and we had no trouble.

he just cut all his hair off, to aid in job search...but now it's so gray he's sad and getting depressed!

i'm comfortable and confident coloring hair at home, but i've never dyed hair that is so very short (it's about 1.5" on top, kind of crew-cut-ish on the sides and in the back). he's concerned that his scalp will get dyed dark brown and look ridiculous. he's not got thinning or balding problems, is just worried about residue on scalp.

anyone have any tips? we want to color this weekend (a nice warm medium brown, we've used it very successfully on his long hair)

thanks!

I use an ash medium blonde on my hair, which turns out looking BLACK when it's time to rinse off.  I like to wipe off any color as soon as it gets on my skin.  As far as the scalp goes, just rinse lightly then massage the hair, while the color is still not completely rinsed off.  Finish rinsing, then apply a conditioning shampoo and wash the hair and scrub the scalp.  I usually get all the BLACK off my head when I do this.  Good luck!  Post a pic when you are done if you can!

They sell some kind of hair dye remover at Beauty supply stores. It is meant for mostly darker colored dyes that tend to stain skin.

I have never exprienced my scalp being stained though, usually only around my face or where it drips (neck and arms) which can be fixed by washing it off as soon as you see it or using the remover on it. (Sorry,I dont know what the remover is called)
