This message I also posted on the Mens Hair board.

I have pretty long hair for a guy - and people keep telling me to cut it as I`m due to start a new job soon. It`s shoulder length and wavey.
I want to do it myself for the experience but I don`t want to mess it up. I don`t have clippers although I am willing to give them a try. What is the longest I can cut my hair with clippers as I`ve never used them before and I don`t want to go too short. I do have sharp haircutting scissors that I use for small trims. Using my scissors I am pretty OK - although the back and tops I wish to cut to about 1 to 2 inch in length which means I need to cut off about 5 inches.

Any good tips

Cutting yourself with clippers is quite easy. Just make sure you comb your hair straight in between, and there`s not much you can mess up.

Also, you might want to let someone else cut the back of your head, or buy a hand mirror.

As for length -- the largest guard setting on my clippers is about 1", but that doesn`t mean they can`t be used for longer cuts. Just not as easily.
