Ok so I was shopping with my mum and sister today, and as my sister and I had experience with bleach and highlighting, we decided we would do mum's hair for her, so she wouldn't have to spend $100 to get it done at the salon.
However, we had only highlighted our own hair, I'm about a level 5-6, and she's about a level maybe 3-4. Mum's a level 2, blackest black, and quite course, with the lengths of her hair highlighted honey brown and mostly plat blonde.. So we decide, since I have 20 vol and 30 vol at home, we'd buy a 40 vol strand test to see which one would be best. Now, my mum is very fussy when it comes to yellow tones in her hair, so we needed to make sure we could lift the black to pale yellow.
So when we went to the counter the young girl about my age (18) was like "are you putting this in your hair?" i was like no, my mother's, and she has black hair and I'm doing the roots, and she's like "no, no, no, no you can't use that will turn the hair to jelly (jelly?), use the 30 volume." And implied I was the biggest fool for ever considering using the 40, and rolled her eyes to the other girl serving at the counter. Now, i appreciate the advice, and was glad she warned me that had i used it, my mother's hair would infact turn to jelly. What confused me was, she said that my mother was naturally quite light, at this point I again reminded her it's for her ROOTS and my mother even showed her close up her black roots. And they are black, I assure you. And she assured us that's she's too light for the 40.
So why on earth do they sell 40 vol peroxide if it's too strong for even coarse black hair? I mean and seeing as it's only the roots, which are in excellent condition. I couldn't see a more fitting situation for the 40 volume.
It's really been bugging me, and if someone could clear it up for me, it'd be oh so appreciated.

Some hairdressers refuse to use 40, maybe that's why. Mine did it on my hair and damaged it pretty badly when I first had it bleached. A good friend of mine went from dyed auburn to plat blonde and her hairdresser would only use 20. She bleached it three times (the last time spot bleach) rather than hit her hair with 40. It came out so nice and healthy and is still extremely long. I think that is the way to go if you can pull it off.
I use 30 with lift colors, but when I was bleaching on my own I used 20 and it was fine. Much more gentle on the hair.

i have really fine hair and my colorist uses 40, doesn't damage it any worse than having to use 20 v. and bleach twice.

Thanks for the responses.
It's weird. I was also under the impression that the least time the chemical was on the hair, the less damage occurred, generally, and that it's more sensible to apply a higher developer than to leave it on for hours and keep reapplying. I knew with a 20 or 30, from just looking at my mum's hair, would need to be left on exceeding an hour and most probably more than once.
I didn't want her walking around with banana hair. lol

I would think with black, you actually would need to bleach. I don't think highlift color even with 40 volume would lift black hair that light without dyeing it many many times (maybe it could go to honey brown, but not platinum blonde. It might get there after you did it many times, but bleach would be less damaging for that procedure, and take MUCH less time.
Maybe she was (rudely) implying that if you used it the amount of times it would take to get black hair that light it might turn to jelly. My hair is dark blonde and I regularly use 40 volume and high lift dye to do my roots (and I have to do it twice to get it light enough). Mine does not turn to jelly, and I leave it on 45 minutes each time. So while I don't think it is the best option for someone with black hair, it certainly is a useable product. That rude girl was either not explaining herself well enough, or is a know-it-all who doesn't know much.

According to Ally's post, I believe she intends to use bleach on her mother's hair.

Maybe it has to do with hair type? I really don't know. I know 40 + bleach is too strong for my hair but 20 + bleach works nicely. And 30 + lift for me is a good combo. I think a strand test is a good idea Ally, to see how your mom's hair will take the 40.

Yeah, it was with bleach.
She wouldn't sell me the 40, I was so annoyed. Anyway, we dyed it, 30 vol, left it on for 50 minutes or so, and I could tell we would need to put it on again, it was bright yellow (worse then it seemed with the bleach on), applied it again, left it for about 20 minutes and it came out a pale yellow. It was annoying though because I didn't have a proper semi toner, all I had was purple conditioner, and Fancilful rinse. It still had yellow. She said she didn't mind, and it's not that visible, but it's just annoying I couldn't get it right. Should I apply a ash hair colour over the top? :(

she woudn't sell you the 40?! first of all that is ridiculous and i would be incredibly pissed if i were you.
you say you didn't have the proper semi toner - could you get it? i'd try to go all the way before you give up! especially if you got her to a pale yellow, because you can put any color over that.
what shade is she trying to achieve??

Wow Ally sounds like you did a great job. Frustrating about the toner. You're in Australia, right? Is that why? Can you get any?

zaxwrit- Yeah, well i'm in sort of a small town aswell, and all we have is the wash-out sort of toners. I bought Wella White Minx from Amazon about a million years ago and it hasn't come yet. But that's for my hair, lol. But yeah, I can't get my hands on a decent one.
I know box colour is evil, but do you think that would do the job? Semi or permanent?
asiabo- Believe me I was so pissed when I left the store, I was almost going to walk out with nothing but I needed the bleach.
Light to Platinum blonde we were trying to achieve. Damn I wish I could have tried the 40.

if you're going for box color, i'd pick up something like lightest ash blonde. it may seem really ashy at first but it will most likely fade. honestly i think this will work fine, especially since she's already to pale yellow!

Ally I think you still would have needed to tone, even with the 40. And I agree with asiabo, get the lightest box color you can find. I just don't know how it will do on newly bleached hair. Hopefully it will be fine.
That wella toner you ordered would be great for her hair. So frustrating that shipping to Australia is so expensive. Where do the salons get their supplies? Any possibility you could get in on that action?
Please keep us posted on your mom's hair (and yours!).

Well, my current salon uses Goldwell, so there's no chance there. I'm thinking of changing though, especially because my stylist left and I've been wanting to try something new. I doubt I could buy any salon supplies, unfortunately.
God what I wouldn't give for a Sally's, or even a Price Attack here.
I told mum to leave purple conditioner on her hair for 30 minutes before her shower, and she said that worked well. Still not perfect though.
I'm going to try to convince her to let me put a light ash dye on it.
